Possibly WCRC trying to prove something to NR management at York regarding successful operation of steam-hauled services - especially since it is suggested that NR at York have suddenly gained "selective hearing" in regard to communications from WCRC.

Facts simply don't enter the equation.

Precisely, so what do you know about it....... The armchair experts are in much better position to make accurate comments.

Well Chessie you can stop all the speculation, if you are "allowed " to say, what the crew of the steam and diesel arrange...is it push when its needed/requested or push regardless??

Perversely one of the strong points of this forum is the amount of nonsense, hearsay, supposition and untruth which gets posted. It makes for a good read and long may it continue.

Far be it from me, and indeed others who try and do a bit to help keep these locos running to spoil this with fact and actualities, fiction is so much more interesting than fact, often dull and uninteresting.

Also, it has to be said that the majority of people on these trips do enjoy themselves regardless and don't want or need to know the minutiae of how it's worked so probably best for the mystique to remain.......

I know that you have your tongue in cheek over this one but "the minutia of how it's worked" is exactly the helpful information that will shut up those on this Forum who haven't a clue about steam and steam/diesel operations and carp on from page to page about the same thing. We know that each trip is a one-off in terms of what may or may not be agreed between the crews and what may or may not happen in practice. So actually, unless it is operationally sensitive or someone is embarrassed, it would help to know first hand what was going on with Braunton on the last WSE as, for example, the DL seemed to be worked away happily at 5.00 min in the video in #186. But of course, I'm prepared to be corrected on that one, not that it's particularly easy to hear what is going on at the back of a train if you are on the footplate!

We seem to be looking for something that doesn't exist.. Chessie1 said so in his own post...

As is usually the case, it's much more fun to sit at home and analyse videos and 'prove' that certain things happen when they probably didn't or look up RTT and demand to know why a railtour made up/lost so much time, or claim that 1A00 could be diverted into the down goods siding bay platform to make way for the 'Weymouth Cathedrals Flyer' to trundle past at 60 mph. Life would be so dull if we couldn't pointlessly speculate!

And you are supposed to be a steam enthusiast? Funny way of showing it.
    34046 doesn't "trundle" at 60 mph, it's a 75 mph loco.
Also people aren't so stupid not to be able to hear a box when it is revving it's guts out either.
Remember the old saying, "The camera doesn't lie".

I am a steam enthusiast but I also believe that the national network doesn't purely exist to run steam locomotives on it.

Yes, the speculation can be fun. Didn't someone on one of these threads recently quote "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story"? However, if and when solid information can be provided then some of us would like to see it. In this particular case, how much of the time was the diesel pushing, how hard, and why?

Something people are not prepared to say for some reason even though they admit to being at the "sharp end".

    hmm

I could suggest it was pushing as much as was needed, as hard as was needed because it was needed...

it could of course be a conspiracy.. in which case it would be

as much as it could, as hard as it could, to deny passengers the ride behind steam, save money on coal so they could spend it on two drivers and diesel fuel instead.

    or the ultimate conspiracy..

Braunton isnt a steam locomotive at all... it was an oversize model assembled in China for Hornby and because it wasn't on 3rd rail the motor wasn't working so the diesel needed to push it to maintain the illusion... ?

Probably because it's difficult to see what business it is of the armchair warriors on here.

And for those people, who possibly have never been near a footplate in their life, a reminder that there are other things to think about when you're at, as you put it, the 'sharp end'......although, in 34046's case, that should be the blunt end.

    It's not an A4.....

Why should they 'say' anything particularly to someone sitting at home complaining.
If, at the destination, you walk up to the front, and tell the driver how much you have enjoyed the day and then ask politely why the diesel appeared to be pushing part of the time, he will probably tell you.
It's all in the approach, and it works for me.

Typical attitude of someone "in the trade", such attitudes are all too rife on here.
Their thinking is that if you are not directly involved in railways in any shape or form you shouldn't be living on this planet.
This forum is full of them.
Just remember it's the "mere mortals" that provide a lot of the income provided, without that you would be stuffed (speaking generally, not just for myself).
Remember it's only railways not GCHQ or part of the official secrets act.
