Like in any other industry, I know someone who used to work in a supermarket & the area manager was always there chasing the store manager picking holes & finding fault.
Aside from all this, Tornado today is an example of how steam tours can run without a box & in appalling conditions.

Since just before 19.00 there has been major disruption south of Peterborough (catenary failure); a fine end to a Bank Holiday for returning travellers.............

Not so long back there were similar seemingly weekly catenary incidents near Newark.

Catenary seems to be the weak link on parts of the ECML.

Should have been modified/renewed by now if the original installation is no longer fit for purpose.

Small wonder so many diesels run "under the wires" on that route.......

Does that mean electrics are going to be banned? I bet not!
Proves yet again that steam is a scapegoat/easy target.

It was apparently done on the cheap with wider spacing of masts than elsewhere. A fix would not be quick.

TV local news this morning reports there are still big problems with the wires on ECML. Passengers Leeds to London are being advised to "check before you leave home"
I think there are only 2/3 services a day using the HST's from Leeds.

It appears that the NMT with Mentor in the consist was the source of the problems. Will our South African Manager (SAM) adopt the same policy that he adopts to Steam Traction and advise the owner that the train is banned from York area forthwith noting that said owner is - Network Rail !

For those who have visited the country it describes a mindset found in some groups resident in the country that some may say is epitomised by the present disagreement whilst for others it is simply a way of creating an acronym in order to humanise a faceless official hiding behind the rules and regulations of his position; yours is the choice of which rationale you accept !

    Fred, this is very cryptic.

I have done considerable business in South Africa over the last 5 years and spent considerable amounts of time around the country.
Personally I find at a business level they are very comparable to our kin much closer to home, in outlook, expression and approach to business. Personally I find they are a much tighter family culture than in the UK and are generally forwards looking than we in the UK.

Their lifestyle, food and culture is different, but we are not talking about having a Braai (BBQ) in York are we ?.

And will remain so as my acronym of SAM is inspired by many thoughts but rather than divert discussion from the main theme of SAM's Steam Ban I shall say no more and leave others to ascribe a rationale to something which may have no rationality.

Whilst I agree with what you have said, I found on my few trips to the area that they do seem to fail miserably when it comes to exploiting the railway system they have, apart from the commuter routes. Rovos struggle to run their charter operation and most of their tours run into Botswana then north to Zimbabwe, in both these countries they get far higher cooperation.

Bit biased seeing he works for the same company.

Yes that's it, the grand conspiracy is emerging from behind the veil; the fog is lifting and all is being revealed. You were right all long, if only we had all listened to your lonely little voice in the wilderness, bleating like a lost sheep on a mountain top...

I thought BALLS stood for Bury Area Local Locomotive Survey... a members "alternative" magazine that circulated the mess huts...at least it did 20 years ago.

SAM is borderline racist in it's use to me.

Is there any danger of having that utter nonsense translated into some form of normal English? Thanks....

It would be great to see more steam around York rather than the copious quantities that seem to be generated in this thread.

"Too much control from those at head office just does not work, it leads to the local manager resenting the interference from above, and time wasted waiting for the top man to come out of a meeting to make an urgent decision whilst not knowing the full facts." (RalphW)

As a retired Civil Servant , I have to agree that "interference from above" is indeed vexating, but if one is paid by the state and one makes a major blunder, costing possibly quite large amounts in lost trade in Scarborough, one should expect a hefty shunt in the rear of the tender, either from Senior managers or from the Minister of State - currently Claire Perry. Sorry RalphW but that comes with the territory of being a public servant.
