Cranmore has done some really good work over the last years with Lady Nan ,5637 and now 46447 coming out of the workshop .
I wonder which is the next loco to be overhauled .

Does Cranmore still have a mainline connection , didnt the oil trains end some time ago?
as for what next, i think they will want to take a breather, well thats 2 out of the former ivatt trust engines , now set to be in traffic very soon, after how long at Quainton ? so how about the Austerity Juno? the IOWSR probally wont need it at Havenstreet for a while and if ESR were to restore that and duel brake it , then as the other 2 are in effect dual braked, the engines could be swopped around between the 2 railways especially when the E1 gets returned to traffic, they could then transfer one of the island Austerities to ESR if it turns out that they dont need 2..

Fine Martin but Juno is on Display at Shildon, where it is safe and secure. The reason why it is at Shildon is that it is regarded as one of the most original engines in preservation. It is very much regarded as our strategic reserve engine.

Who is going to pay for all of this swopping about? don't forget we have the additional costs of ferries to consider as well.

Our Facebook friend Stuart commented on photo of 41313 on FB and asked "how far is the restoration ? " He was politely reminded it was still in ex Barry condition . I don't think this will be his new project.

would it be too much to hope it, 41313 turns out to be in as good condition as 46447 when the time comes where ever it gets done , whats the IOW's plan, to do W2 first, then 41313, or to do both at same time, finance allowing? prehaps sending the ivatt to cranmore may be an option if workshop space is an issue after all havenstreet have Ajax and invincible to do full ten years overhauls on and W2 before they start on the second ivatt tank,

With the scale of the job of 46447, ESR would do well to consider contract work from outside..
Looks like they have a good set of skills in house they could start to market ..

73096 might need an overhaul ?

Yes, Cranmore is still mainline connected. There is about a mile or so of unused track between ESR and Yeomans Quarry Rail Terminal (old name I know). Tomorrow, 13 September, The Mendip Sprinter is due to run Bristol to Cranmore and return. See The Mendip Traction & Rolling Stock Group Facebook page for details of this special.

The launch of 46447 has been confirmed as being at 10:30 on Sunday 26th October. There will be a small ceremony at Cranmore Station, followed by the first train hauled by 46447 at 11:00.

Did ivatt 2's ever work the line in previous days,? being near to Shepton mallet might it had been a midland worked line or was it worked from bristol by the GWR? around that part of Sommerset, there were many midland branches, my Nan lived in Gloucester ,GWR country but at the bottom of her road was where the midland line crossed the GW

3 Ivatt's were allocated to St Philip's March in 1953 from new, these were 46525, 46526 and 46527 and all featured regularly on the line. The latter 2 were replaced by 46506 and 46507 before closure with 46517 also appearing on the line from time to time.

Other non GWR classes on the line included the Class 2 Ivatt tanks which were regulars as well as the BR Std 3 tanks. Maybe one day the ESR will be able to repeat this! :-D

    Cheers, Paul

Congratulations to all at the ESR on such an impressive restoration. 46447 looks really good. While there's no denying that the conditrion of the loco when work started was a lot better than that of some other current in-progress Barry restorations (4253, 2874, 5538 and 5539 spring to mind), that still does not detract from what (to my untrained eye) looks a good job well done. I'll have to pay a visit some time.

The back of the tender is now very close to completion.

Work has started on the lining.

The cab windows have been fitted.

New works plates now adorn the front of the engine. We managed to resist the temptation to fit "Re-built Cranmore 2012-14" plates!

There are now only 5 weeks to go until the official launch of 46447, when at 11:00 on 26th October 2014 she will haul her first revenue earning train since 1966.

Some very subtle attention to detail on the tender.. I like it.

    Is a pre-1948 tender ?

The tender (No. 7047) is the original tender allocated to 46447 and was also built at Crewe in 1950, though the tender number plate is not the original.

As hinted at in post #158 (see above!), at 11:43 this morning, 46447 moved under her own power for the first time since 1966.

    20140927_060_1_med.JPG
46447 is pictured moving under her own power for the first time since 1966, just over 99 weeks after she arrived at the East Somerset Railway.

On the morning of Sunday 26th October, 46447 will be returned to traffic and will haul her first passenger carrying train in 48 years.
