Good climb to Buriton with 28 min. Slow up to Haslemere because of a crazy gauging restriction.......station canopy I was told!Lost path at water stop and ran 20 late from there to London. A good day though. Thanks to DBS/UKRT/Icons of Steam.

Sounds weird? Why allow that path AND time it without the slow entry? SO 19 minutes late at Milford, couple of stations up from Haslemere.

There is not much slack on the Pompey direct. Our Haslemere water stop allowed a fast London bound service to call and pass us at 1802. We then had to be away at 1805 ahead of the semi fast service that would have called at Haslemere at 1815. The crazy gauging speed restriction at Liphook (not allowed for in the path) cost us dearly and put us late at Haslemere. Although we were ready to go five minutes before the semifast was due, NR decided that wasn't good enough and so we were held to let it pass.

If it had been thought through properly then we should have been given the path we actually did take leaving at 1820 and getting back to Waterloo that much later. It is worth noting that on the section where there was the most risk of us losing time - i.e. the climb up to Buriton - we actually kept time. Braunton was on top form today and a load of 10 suited her well.

I wonder, had this tour been a week or two later, would Braunton have been allowed up the Pompey direct with Load 10 and no Diesel?

Its a bad leaf fall line, But I have seen Clan Line with the heavy pullman out in fall on the climb into Worlplesdon on its own. The local NR team know their track adhesion limits out there.

This is a message to anyone in West Coast who reads this Forum. The picture shows Braunton standing in Platform 19 at Waterloo. Notice that the loco fits quite nicely, as it did in the same morning when the train left for Salisbury. I understand that when she was hauled out by diesel back to Southall this needed a radio release of the train because it was fouling the track circuit. Nothing untoward happened. Waterloo really is the optimum departure point for trains down the SWML, not Victoria. Please note.

Edit: By the way, notice that the headcode carried in the photo is the correct one for working up the Pompey direct. (There was also a buffer beam regulation high intensity light that Braunton carried when on the move).

DJW, looks as though you were on the road bridge where I was on the footbridge a little further up.

Felt it was a fantastic run as far as Basingstoke, but we were subsequently regulated near Oakley because of the superb effort. Some smart handling by Wayne meant that we kept on the move so that the run was indeed non-stop to Salisbury. Average speed between Waterloo and Basingstoke was around 63mph. Good to meet some fellow NatPres peeps in person, too. Wasn't at my best as I'd been up since 4AM, having travelled down from York, and a couple of pints didn't make my ramblings any better! Anyway, good times.

Front the footplate of Braunton at Waterloo last night, I learned that Rob Binstead was due to have fired 34046 up from Salisbury last night but had to withdraw because his father is ill. Ken Binstead is the one of the most kind and considerate, not to mention expert steam drivers, that I have ever had the joy to meet. I last met Ken at Rodney Tizzard's retirement "do" at the Eastleigh Railway club some years ago and I would like to take this opportunity to wish Ken my heartfelt desire for him to pull through so that I can yet again meet him and again share some of the wonderful moments he has given us in the mainline steam era.

Yes, I heard that news as well. Ken is the man who gave me my fastest ascent of Savernake from Westbury with 13 pullmans on the VSOE as it then was. There were two TSRs near Edington and just after Lavington that cramped his style a bit. But we blasted up through Woodborough at 70, touched 80 at Wootton Rivers and went over the top at 78 in 28¼ minutes from the start. Quite remarkable........and Clan Line was rather good as well.
