Just so and can I add that given that the loco was under power and not in any confined space exhaust-wise it's not really the set of circumstances that might trigger a blow back anyway.

Here’s my video of the run on the 14th. On the outward run the location is Dainton. On the return the location is just below the woods at Hemerdon. Another good performance by Tangmere on these Devon banks.

It's the way that, for a brief moment, the glare from the open firebox door beats the auto systems of the camera causing it to record it as that huge flare.

That's a relief to know, didn't realise a webcam could fool you in such a way.

The auto systems of most video cameras do not react quickly enough to record that correctly, it's more noticeable on sound tracks where the drop in recording level from the blast of a whistle is noticable after the whistle has stopped, and there is a short quiet bit before the exhaust is heard properly again.
Even high tec equipment can suffer, a car comes towards the camera and as the headlights shine directly into the lens the whole screen is flared out.

Pete Roberts was driving from Plymouth back to Bristol last night. Tangmere doing the last two with Ray Churchill on the usual Bristol-Par-Plymouth trip.. another brilliant trip from him and Tangy yesterday.

    Cant say I agree,
There's no way that's a reflection in the light and the delay at Exeter wasn't due to watering issues it happened on the way down, the delay on the way back was due to them requesting an ambulance meet them,

a passenger was I believe taken ill , however that was not the cause of the delay at Exeter which was due to Water

34098 , My information comes from the RO on the day . Do you wish to argue with someone who was there ?

Thinking about it logically, I highly doubt 34067 would have proceeded beyond Exeter (or more likely requested to go inside at Dawlish Warren), if there was indeed a blowback and medical attention required.

So the crew required an ambulance at Exeter, but were then mysteriously able to recover in a few minutes and drive on to Bristol...... yeah, right!

Let me assure all those very concerned correspondents of the following FACTS:
    a) There was no blowback at Dawlish, it was purely the camera reacting to the sudden bright light of the fire reflecting in the exhaust in the dusk conditions.
    b) An ambulance was called at Exeter to a passenger on the train, completely unrelated to the 'Blowback that wasn't'. This happens occasionally on our jobs, and is probably related to the age profile of many of our passengers.
c). The delay at Exeter due to watering issues was on the outward journey. The outward was retimed due to a possession related to the tide coming in at Fordgate early this year. (Very sensible signalling alterations by NR designed to reduce the impact of any future flooding). The retiming meant a much shorter water stop than usual.
Whilst I am very sorry to disappoint the 'Prophets of Doom', These are the facts.
Please feel free to quote the above to any doubters.
    Andy.

A bright headlight can also send auto focus wild. I set the focus of my video camera to manual when filming steam trains in dull conditions. <BJ>

No he means focus, the system cannot pick up the headlight and on videos you can see it going in and out of focus as the auto tries to sort it. Set focus to infinity on manual and the problem is solved.

But if "the whole screen is flared out" Then that's surely not a focus problem... :p

I REALLY like the top of those two photos. Something about it............................................

So different to the standard shots we see so often, (although there is nothing wrong with such shots at all),

There are a few others that I sacked off in favour of that one, Its a shame the light wasn't better otherwise the image would be less noisey

No I don't. At night a bright headlight can confuse the auto focus.

As Ralph W suggests, set the focus to manual and infinity. <BJ>
