I'm sure they would offer a generous sympathetic cash hand out to all those non paying photographers getting their jollies for free and contributing zilch to today's activity.

I thought WCRC always used T'n'T 47's to avoid this happening

The ecs made it to Oxford ok.. To the platform, 5 mins before departure...

    How frustrating!

I Remeber doing a cotton mill like that a few years back, came up from London to Lancaster... Waited 3 hours for 46115 to arrive due to brake failure, then a nice run to Preston where we spent a further 2.5 hours due to a second (loco) brake failure... The a 47 took us back to Lancaster, and I went back home to London only a few hours earlier than planned.

Two weeks later on the re-run... Ontime until Eccles then it failed.
So 3rd pass a few more weeks later it got to Manchester and failed.
Don't think they've done one since.

No they don't. If a railtour is 100% diesel hauled, there will be a diesel at the front and rear. <BJ>

might need to rethink that scenario after today, even dragging a 47 around dead

Trains break occasionally no matter how well maintained they are, be it an A4, class 47 or Pendolino, all have spent time in the "knackered" column, you can reduce the number of failures but never eradicate them, for the mileage they rack up, WCRC diesels are fairly reliable loco's, think how much ECS, light engine and diesel only tours that you never take notice of they rack up mileage on, rarely is note taken of these because rarely is there a problem.

Adding a 2nd diesel would mean more costs, shunting moves, and increase the likelyhood of the steam loco being asked to lug it round all day, alternatively we could all calm down and accept that with the best will in the world, breakdowns will occasionally happen.

Too damn right they should, every last penny + compensation.
What about out of pocket expenses?
Food/drink as already mentioned, passengers travelling expenses to get to their boarding point (by whatever means), parking costs, any overnight stay expenses for those who couldn't travel in the morning, time taken off work-paid or otherwise.
60019's costs as mentioned by Big Al.
    The list is totally endless.

Would you say that if you were booked on this? Having got to your boarding point & had some of the scenarios mentioned above? Plus the general disappointment, it looked like a good trip.

I wonder whether RTT (or, rather, the systems that supply data to RTT) is telling porkies....

ECS arrives Oxford platform 1 at 08.19.
Service train from Reading (2L40) arrives platform 1 at 08.29.

Seems rather unlikely for the ECS to arrive, brake problem found, decision made to cancel the tour, ECS to clear the platfotm and service train to arrive all in 10 minutes.

Unless, of course, that the ECS didn't actually stop in the platform and passed straight tbrough (RTT wouldn't record the movement beyond Oxford as it was not planned), in which case, I wonder what the problem was that allowed the ECS to run but not the tour.

Here we go again, showing your bitter and twisted side again. 1/ Line side video-photographers who publish their stuff provide free advertising for the TOC's, 2/ They also pay to partake in trips, probably far more regularly than the once in a lifetime trippers. 3/ They encourage friends and family to partake in trips.

Go suck a rusk or something and think of something pleasant.

That was partially tongue in cheek!
Even if I had "contributed" what would I have got out of it?
    ZILCH as you put it.

You may have missed that a few days ago, some wires were brought down near Runcorn, thought to be by LM service, however the following pendolino was the one that got stuck. Driver got down to investigate and suffered electric shock, but I believe not fatal. Passengers stuck in train for several hours and nothing moved on the Crewe to Liverpool route for even longer. So lets just keep the moans about diesel and steam failures in perspective, all trains are susceptible to failures of one sort or another. Should the pendo have had a diesel on the back just in case.........

As Ralph has said trains break down now and again, but most posters on here don't know about it unless a steam charter is involved in the breakdown there is no such thing as 100% reliability regardless the age of the traction. A few weeks ago I was on a Voyager heading up north, we were delayed for well over an hour after leaving Bristol due to the failure of a freight train. also the overnight sleeper between London and Penzance often has problems with locomotive failures.

    See post 23.
I traveled up from London the night before, to be on the trip aforementioned in my post.

I would say "alternatively we could all calm down and accept that with the best will in the world, breakdowns will occasionally happen".

    That do you ?

When you write that letter to WCRC, asking for costs related to a wasted trip trying to take a photograph of their train, do us a favour, would you give us the honour of posting their reply here.
That would be an extremely pleasant read i'm sure...

But be careful when you open the envelope, that origami finger might poke you in the eye.

I have no intention of writing to WCR and demanding a refund, and I never said I would. I merely uttered a mild expletive, and mentioned I had a long journey home, and did not utter another word of comment or complaint. But of course that was more than enough for you to launch into a completely unjustified rant about freeloading moaning photters who never give anything back. Alas your fraught fevered little mind wont be able to salivate over a rejection letter from WCR, sorry to disappoint you, perhaps you can go and abuse a traffic warden instead? How about a Policemen - I understand "haven't you got any criminals to catch" or "I pay your wages" works rather well with them.

    Have a nice afternoon.

Agreed. He makes a habit of rude and often wholly incorrect comments and he's an adminstrator who is there to stop such things! His oppo will no doubt be in again defending him shortly.
