I was expecting a solid gold boiler for that price tag.

My Fantasy Gala would be more to do with rolling stock than Locos; Rounding up some Pre nationalisation Rakes of including a Pullman rake, with appropriately Liveried locos to suit, ideally 7 or 8 per rake plus an odd pre nationalisation to really impress. Top it off with a long mixed goods...

Thinking more about this- I suppose the obvious (hypothetical)question is where would be suitable for such an event? Parts of the GCR were used in the original exchanges but it not really a challenging route- but I suppose would offer greatest operational flexibility?

You've obviously not been watching "double your home for half the money" or those other home improvement programs...

someone's been in to 2516s firebox / smoke box and painted it magnolia.. makes a nice living room, opening the smokebox door gives additional lighting to make that overall a homely appeal, add a bit of ambient lighting in the chimney and you too could have that special place uniquely called home...
and adds a 0 or two to it's price tag.

From that picture it looks like it has blue silicon hoses fitted in the smokebox too?!;)

Didn't realise it was a tuned version- everyone knows that adding coloured slilcon hoses to a corsa adds at least 20hp at the spare wheel- is it the same for 2516?

I suppose a Maunsell Gala could be interesting. I know the MHR tried 2 years back and has already been suggested. Maybe at the Bluebell complete the Maunsell set

31874, 1638, 928, 541, 850, 847 and 777. The only problem would be the tickets of 1638, 777 and 850 who all bow out in 2016 (as far as I know) and without resorting to take a second loco from Swanage in one of the U's to replace 1638 (unless the Bluebell just display 1618).

Dare I tweak the line up with 60163 and 60532? And move it a tad further north say Carlisle to Glasgow and back via G & SW, lets do it properly!

We came so close with SSS2, maybe one day such a line-up will be staged. SVR did well in 2008.

However also like to one day see all four Jubilees brought together at CVR for an event, and also have a pair of Jintys in order to use Cauldon for "Memories of the Lickey"... What a site that would be!

My own fantasy gala line up on a preserved railway would involve (in a few years time) 42500 (it will have a 4 on its plate if I win the Euros) 42085/73, 41241, 82045, 84030, 46443, a 78xxx 43106, a Black 5 and a Standard 5. Be intresting to compare them all against each other. As a footnote was intresting to compare 43924, 88 then 43106 & 73129 against each other the other week.

I was going for a East Coast V West Coast theme. With The GCR being the neutral venue. This could be all possible once the bridge is completed. Though, probable overhauls would be the sticking point !

NYC Hudsons (streamlined and standard), a Niagara or two. A PRR T1 and an S1, full Broadway and 20th Century Limited train sets. Maybe the odd New Haven and NKP loco for a bit of variety too :)

I'm not thinking so much of a gala as something creative on the ML. Train 1 starts from Waterloo and runs to Salisbury via Surbiton where the train reverses and returns to Waterloo via Romsey and Southampton. Train 2 then does the same again from Waterloo. Train 3 runs Wloo - Soton - Salis - Wloo.

Steam loco A - Wloo to Salisbury on Train 1 (0855 - 1030) and Salisbury to Waterloo via Soton on Train 2. (1600 - 18.30)
Steam loco B - Salisbury to Waterloo via Soton on Train 1. (1100 - 1330)
    Steam loco C - Waterloo to Salisbury on Train 2. (1355 - 1530)
One set of rolling stock for the above.

Second set of rolling stock for Train 3:
    Steam loco B - Waterloo to Salisbury (via Soton) - (1630 - 1900)
    Steam loco C - Salisbury to Waterloo (direct) (1930 - 2100)

Quite an interesting day for the punters:
A whole day in Salisbury from Waterloo
Three hours in London from Salisbury or from Southampton.
Two return trips to Salisbury from Waterloo for the enthuisiasts.

    The fantasy bit is that:
A steam loco will back onto a set of rolling stock at Waterloo that has a steam loco at the other end.
At about 1730 at some point around Worting Junction, two steam trains will pass each other.

Now that's what I call fantasy.
PS All authentic former SR locos of course. But hey, I don't actually care what is on them if it were for real.

Hmmmm well if it's sheer fantasy I'll go for a long gala on the (reconstructed!) Leek and Manifold Valley Light Railway (the first line in Britain to use 2-6-4Ts if I'm not mistaken) and tied in with a CVR / MCR Gala featuring (mostly) LMS locos but with the Knotty 0-6-2T thrown in as well.

Mmmmm, savouring the pints at the Manifold Inn, Royal Oak (at Wetton), George (Alstonefield), Watts Russell Arms (Hope Dale), Cavalier (Grindon, specially re-opened) and the Royal Oak and the George at Waterhouses.

I think my dream gala would follow similar to Class8Mikado's, in that I would look at less locos and more stock....

    Strathspey Railway, Grantown re-opening.

Yes, everything would be in BR Black sadly for those in hunger for pre-grouping.

    Black 5 No. 45025
    Caledonian 0-6-0 No. 57566
    Caledonian 0-4-4 No. 55189
and maybe another Five or Standard 4 brought in (see stock mainline move)...

As for stock, I'd look at a rake of Blood & Custards being brought in, but if not, SRPS Railtour Rake could do!
Three low loaders worth of wagons from various places, to give a formidable freight set!
One of the tender locos fitted with a specially made snowplough, as we haven't seen that in preservation yet! (Or so I am led to believe).

An intensive timetable, with possibility of charters week leading/following to help with transportation costs.

Who would be up for seeing all that in the Scottish Highlands? I would bet a large proportion of the railway community would....

Id like a S&D themed gala.

With the replica of Locomotion running, and with the NRM D17 returned to steam. J72, 69023 (in Black running as 68691), J21 65033, Q6 63395, K1 62005, 4MT 76069 (running as 76049), 43106 (as it hauled the last train to Crook!), and 60009, 60007, 60532 and 60800 all from "Diversions".

78018, 78019 and the NER snowplough would be an obvious addition to the gala...

As its at a preserved railway, would probably have to go to NYMR, but Wensleydale with more stock and loops would be a nice idea too.

Nice one, Al. A Southern Plandampf! Just for good measure, 30053 could work the stock movements between Waterloo and Clapham. Like you, I don't much mind which loco works which diagram. It would be great just to sit by Battledown flyover and see what turned up.
