Talking to WCRC 45699 support crew members on Sunday, 35018's restoration is going very well, but they could not say when. However sometime next year is a pretty good bet.

So when it's ready, it's ready, but certainly not in time for some of the very optimistic possibilities shown on the RTC tours site. Nothing new there then.

On the CATHEDRALS EXPRESS: MHR TO BLUEBELL WITH 34046: 2ND OCTOBER 2014 thread

Is it just my impression, or do both Braunton's and Tangmere's drain cocks squirt out more steam than those of other locos currently operating on the main line? Several recently-posted videos show clouds of steam completely hiding the front of the loco as it sets off. Do Bulleids in general do this?

No more than other locomotives, and there are plenty of variables such as atmospheric conditions involved. The worst offenders in my view are LMS locomotives, particularly when they jam open.

I did notice that a rebuilt has 3 drain cocks on the outer cylinders while an un-rebuilt has 2. Any ideas why? I noticed this on a rare occasion when Archie and Blackmore Vale were parked on adjacent roads in the shed at Sheffield Park .

Its the other way round. Rebuilt has 2, Unrebuilt has 3. An interesting bit of miscellany that I don't know the answer to without my references, which are currently 275 miles away as the crow flies.

Third pipe on the Unrebuilts is from the steam chest drains.

Thanks for clarifying that, I suspected that was the case. Is the steam chest drain on an rebuilt in a different location, or not required?

Steam chest drains are still there. The drain pipes are routed differently

A pity if the case as 35018 is one of the potential locos on the Bath Christmas Market from Three Bridges to Bristol on December 6th and the Sussex Christmas Belle on December 9th and I would love to see 35018 on the front as apposed to another couple of appearances by 34067 (which I don't mind as its steam in Haywards Heath but is a bit too repetitive each year now).

Came across a couple of interesting videos on youtube:

Southern Steam - The early days of the Bulleid Pacifics

Southern Steam - Bulleids Leader under construction

I vaguely recall someone on one of the threads enquiring about the Bulleid valve gear and how it works. In the first video, there is a sequence with the camera actually IN the oil bath(!!) as the valve gear is operating - fascinating. This is followed by some excellent footage, including the naming of Channel Packet and Belgian Marine during the 1948 loco trials.

The second video shows the sleeve valve gear in operation, including the oscillating drive to the valves - even more fascinating!!

    Cheers

    Alan

    CanPac at 105mph

Following the popular mini series looking at the history of 35005 Canadian Pacific, I was lucky enough to come across one of her former fireman on Facebook. As part of the Mid Hants “Canadian Pacific – Engineering a Future from the Past” project (if the Heritage Lottery grant is successful) they will be creating a historical record (oral, video and displays) of how steam trains were used for evacuations from London in the Second World War, immigrants travelling from Southampton in the 1950s, holiday maker specials in the 1950s and 1960s such as the Atlantic Coast Express and other tales about the locomotive itself. After a brief chat Dave kindly agreed to write an article about a rather special run he was part of on May 15th 1965. So a big thank you goes out to Dave Wilson for sharing this wonderful tale about Canadian Pacific.

Would of done it earlier but I got distracted watching my get destroyed by Real Madrid.

Let's hope we raise lots of money at the gala this weekend. A few western engines might scare some of the more hardcore southern fans into donating lots of pennies to CanPac.

Recommend TVP's 'Bulleids in Retrospect', which is probably where that footage is from. A good 70 minute overview of the types that has surprisingly few errors in the commentary.

Me and my dad are very patriotic with the southern railway.. I love the bulleids because they are such graceful and charismatic engines and I am building a model railway that is very typical southern haha I just think the rebuilt look very smart and are very lovely to look at :) and the unrebuilts are an absolute eye candy and my dad loves the schools class and owns Stowe, Brighton and the special edition Eastbourne aswell as some tank locos aswell.

An interesting comment about the 'eye candy' appeal of an unrebuilt Bulleid Pacific. And in common with the term as sometimes used for the fair sex, it is the quality of what lies beneath the surface that matters most.
