Nine people out with the Wednesday PW gang today. Enough for two jobs close together. Three of us took down a big ash tree growing too close to a bridge abutment and then rejoined the main team replacing concrete sleepers ready for the steam trains up to Ipstones this weekend.

Ash burns well when green, so get those logs used now.

Wow! That thing was HUGE! Too bad it was too close to the bridge. Anyone look at the trunk to guesstimate how many rings (i.e. age)?

It was quite large, trunk diameter about 26 inches. I would guess at about 50 years old.
Root killer not done this week but it will be done in the next week or two - otherwise within a year there will be 4ft of growth again.

Just a broken spring. Nothing too serious, but now withdrawn for minor repairs to be completed plus final painting and fixing of the nameplate ahead of Santas. N7 will be in use on our only remaining public dates until then on October 25 / 31.

Following a positive response from the majority of Shareholders, the CVR this week have made the "Ipstones Track Appeal" open to the public. The double benefits period has been extended until the end of the year for any new shareholders, and a reminder that any investments of £500 or more are eligible for 30% tax refund under the Enterprise Investment Scheme. The original target was for over £76k, presently we now need just under £35k to complete the purchase in full.

Don't understand this. Why are the CVR buying track from the MCR when it will be ripped up and replaced if the MCR get things sorted with the quarry company. It appears to be dead money to me.

Don't see what the problem is. It is a straightforward query.

Apologies if I missed something somewhere in past postings; but doesn't the track actually belong to Network Rail, and is leased to MCR?

150Yr lease was signed in 2009. As we're only 5yrs into said lease, plenty of time to restore said track which is still planned as part of returning freight trains to Cauldon.

What MCR plans are, we as volunteers have no idea, but they have said they will only sell this 5.2miles to CVR (so it wont be sold for scrap). So CVR is now asking for support to help complete this purchase before the end of the year. Buying this trackwork means the CVR Heritage services to Ipstones can continue up until the very moment that MCR formally announce the upgrading program that will be required prior to any freight services. As it stood if MCR wanted they could of ripped the track up tomorrow if they so desired and CVR would of had no say in the matter (NOT saying they would, but could). Doing this though gives the CVR some protection of their services, and allows us to maintain what is a hugely popular service still even after nearly 4 years of use. There are also plans to see Ipstones Station developed a little, but no point having a station if there's no guarantee of track.

So please, for those of you that enjoy visiting the CVR do consider supporting this appeal. £35k is not a huge amount compared to many appeals around, and yet it will allow us to build on what has been achieved over the last 3/4 years.

Were MCR to fail (God forbid) after the track had been 'bought' from them, would Network Rail not just retake possession of the track along with everything else?
