Apologies if this is "old news", but I have searched and cannot find a specific thread for it. Reading one of the mags in WHS this morning they comment thatBert Hitchens is selling his Black 5 due to the "years catching up with him".
Loco still has several years to go on its ticket.

Useful loco that will find a new home no doubt.

TBH Im suprised there hasn't been any Froth on here about where its going, I bet the NYMR are slightly dissapointed though. In hindsight (That wonderful thing) if they'd have hung on a bit they could have a mainline certified 'five'. Be intresting to see where it goes

Maybe a question of ££. Didn't a benefactor buy the most recent Black 5 to arrive on the NYMR and gift it to them, but maybe that one was not main line certified and came with a lower price tag. I don't know, just surmising. (44806 was it?)

I've suggested that it might be a good buy for the NYMR on the NYMR forum, and even suggested how it might be paid for, but I think they're about spent up at the moment. I think they would like another Whitby-capable class 5 but it all comes down to resources, and with several in private hands I'm sure there will be other opportunities. If the traffic on offer continues to grow an 8F or two might be a better bet.

61624, talking of class 5 motive power, are there any clues as to the future for the John Bunch Standard 5? Not followed it particularly, but I think it has left/or is soon to leave the Mid-Hants.

    SirArchie.
Try prising 34027 out Mr Swallows hands after this overhaul. Will be close to 9 years in the making when she reappears. It will be a lovely sight to see 2 rebuilt Bulleids on the SVR next year.

Sure a figure around £850k was quoted last year for 45231 straight out of its overhaul.

Not as far as I know. I'd like to see it at the NYMR, Std 5s were shedded at Scarborough so it would be an appropriate class, but everything
    I've heard points to Carnforth.

Well if Mayflower went for £1million a few weeks ago then why shouldn't a 5 go for the same figure if not more depending on the equipment thats fitted to it?

76079 was sold for around that sort of figure IIRC.

600K was the figure for 76079, I think. It all depends on the lprice and the loco's condition, doesn't it. The fact that it hasn't yet sold suggests that there are issues with one or both for potential buyers.

Say goodbye to 44932 and purchase 45231.

Don't follow your logic here. 44932 is one of the later Black 5s and I think has one of the later, higher superheat boilers, so is probably the better bet for main line use.

It doesn't necessarily work that way. I can't remember where I read it, but it was definitely someone closely involved professionally, that the 21 element boilers were the best steamers of all the Black Fives. There's some sense in this: heat used to superheat steam which has already been boiled cannot be used to generate more steam, so the smaller superheaters provided more heat for evaporation. Of course, the bigger superheater then made the steam already generated much more efficient in the cylinders. Nothing's simple in this life.

Presumably there's a trade off, but why did the LMS go for higher superheat boilers later on in that case?

As said, because the steam that is generated produces more work and efficiency in the cylinders. The original low superheat of Stanier's boilers proved to be unsuitable for LMS conditions, irrespective of how well it served the GWR.
