44932 is a very strong engine I have a recording of it romping up Sapperton with 11 on made it look easy, maybe it's pushed too hard for its own good?
Just needs the issue with the taps sorting properly.
Could even be a cylinder oil problem I know for a fact that double coil Sentinels would not tolerate the same oil as the single coil ones and Morris's had to produce a higher grade oil to prevent carbonisation of the oil round the valves.

    Cheers Dave

So doesn't that suggest that the higher superheat boilers are better, or is it felt that the 21-element ones were the best compromise?

Discounting the freak of 4472, does that make 61306 the heritage steam equivalent of footballer Trevor Francis in 1979 or have others said to have changed hands for seven figure sums?

Locos have cost that much to restore or overhaul before now, but I don't think any have hit that price tag at the tills yet. I wonder what that will do to the expectations of the owners of 60532?

Where has the figure of £1M come from? I would have thought that as it was a private deal that only two people and their solicitors would know - but I reckon that if it had gone on the open market it might well have sold for more.

All I'm saying is that as Mayflower is a mainline registered loco and has only been on NR metals less than a handful of times, then what does the value of the regular/frequent mainline stalwarts now go up too, 45231 being one of them? Food for thought there....

The market will decide and given that its been an open secret for a number of years that 45231 could be bought and no buyer has come forward it would suggest the price is too high.

There is at least one well known person in the market, for a Black 5.. and it was published that he was out bid on 44806... owns a number of mainline locos already all of them larger than a class 5...
As 45231's been around the market for a while, would suggest that the price maybe too high, otherwise one would have assumed it would have been snapped up by that person and would have been sat in Southall by now.

If Scotlands going to become a new steam mecca.. it's going to need a few more mainline loco's and 45231 based at SRPS could be a good business move for a new owner...

Was 44871 SRPS owned- as that sat about for quite a while at Bo'ness before Ian Riley bought it?

No it was owned by an individual whose name escapes me.

Also i guess all the spare parts would have been part of the deal.

Messers Johnstone and Frazer i think bought it off Peter Beet in the 70s. In the early 00s Chris Beet invested in the form of increasing shareholding based on work done to it.
Mr Riley presumably bought it from the partnership in 2006.

Was it Graham Johnstone and Willie Frazer? The former having the Mull connection?

I think it was Graham Ellis who was the Mull connection.

Clearly 61306 is worth more than any Black 5 - meticulously maintained low mileage machine and the only one of the surviving pair ever likely to be available for purchase. There's a price on exclusivity.
