This was the operation whose instigator was a VAT Inspector, who got jailed for VAT fraud.

And our dear friend Mr. A. Roberts popped up while this nonsense was going on. Something to do with the dmu vehicles on site IIRC.

One of Dowty Railway Society's locomotives was indeed the Avonside 0-4-0T Cadbury No 1. This locomotive had the honour of hauling the first steam hauled service on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway in April 1984. For this historic event, the locomotive carried, in my opinion, a most inappropriate headboard which read: "22nd Year Dowty Railway Society". Still, it was their locomotive I guess. It is now at BRM Tyseley and is not currently in working order. Unlike other steam locomotives I had seen and heard, this one made virtually no noise, it hissed a little but certainly didn't "chuff". As a younger person then, I remember being most unimpressed. I guess it was just the way it was driven.

Radstock has had two failed goes with the first on the S&DJR line, and the second on the GWR line from Radstock to Frome where the track is still in situ.

There was something planned at Market Drayton. A couple of schemes for relaying the Lyme Regis branch, Ifracombe, Waverley, which is now half happening. LRPS in the Luton area in the 60's, Hednesford.
Quite a few original steam sheds have been preserved, then lost. Radstock, Southport, Dinting, Hull Dairycoates, (45305), Northwich, (45596), passed over in favour of a goods shed on the KWVR. Bodmin, although that was revived by the BWR. The sites of Goole and Upper Bank sheds were to have been rebuilt but, weren't.

Did anyone mention the SRPS' old base in Falkirk before they moved to Bowness? And there was a set up at the old Fleetwood power station site. Their Black 5 went to Butterley (after some robbing ba$t@rds cut out the firebox tubeplate) and most of the rest of the stock went to Steamport and then Preston. Ray.

LRPS at Luton moved to Quainton Rd, now Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, the site at Laportes was only a storage area.

Not exactly a railway preservation scheme but Butlins at Ayr and Minehead ensured the preservation of a number of locomotives, two Stanier pacifics and two Terriers I believe.

I think in total there were eight locos at four camps - a large and small loco at each.

    AFAIK, the situation was:

Stanier 6203 and Stroudley Terrier 40 at Pwhelli (The Terrier is now on the IoWSR)

Royal Scot 6100 and Adams B4 102 Granville (now at Bressingham) at Skegness

Duchess 6229 and Terrier 78 (Knowledge - now on the KESR) at Minehead

Duchess 6233 and Terrier 62 (Martello - now at Bressingham) at Ayr.

Even Homer nods occasionally. I think you mean 'Knowle' not 'Knowledge' Tom !:)

A touch of the 'predictive texts' perhaps?

    kind regards

Good name for a loco, though!

Has there ever been a loco called 'Knowledge'?

Well, there's been an Enigma and an Experiment, so why not? If I were a betting man, I'd be looking in old LNWR loco lists.

Though the SER (I think - may have been the LSWR) had a "Flirt"!

    Two more narrow gauge systems-

Cadeby Light Railway run by the late Rev. Teddy Boston

Mull and West Highland Railway- which recently closed.

Two standard gauge sites which I presume have closed but maybe readers can give further information on

Hereford- Bulmers Railway Centre (original home of 6000 Loco Association)
Caerphilly- operated by Caerphilly Railway Society
