That's what I heard. Sent to Bridgnorth for overhaul, painted black on one side, pics taken and kept safe for April fool's while the loco was overhauled.

Despite being very western in my preferences, I do think western locos look good in fresh or clean black. It loses the appeal a bit when not clean.

Seem to remember reading that one of the NRM top bods came to visit before the loco was dismantled at Bridgnorth but after the black was put on-the SVR works manager had to keep him talking on one side of the loco to stop him seeing the other side!

A City isn't SO different in appearance from several other GW classes from the same period. Were any of those ever black? Anyway the still similar mongrel Dukedogs that survived into BR days were painted black.

That was John Coily I think and Alun Rees had to keep him busy! Intrestingly enough Nula Seer from the fictious 'SVR liveries commitee' is Alun Rees's name backwards.

Strange that this keeps coming up everytime a 3440 thread appears. Having sat with and drank with the man who lined it out in the 80s. It upset a lot of died in the wool GWR fans.

    Well,
    • when 3440 was repainted into BR black at the SVR it was done on one side only, and not this side.
    • AFAIK it never ran in steam in this condition
    • The tender lining in this picture is different to that in the genuine picture
So, my conclusion is that it has been photoshopped but I could be wrong. It happens regularly and my knowledge of GW locos is quite poor.

All the large wheel 4-4-0s were gone before the war. The only 4-4-0s left by BR were the Dukedogs and a handful of Bulldogs and Dukes. The last Bulldogs were in unlined black according to RCTS. There's a photo on RMweb

Steam Railway also had 1 letter of complaint from a LNWR fan saying such a fabulous livery did not belong on such an awful loco.

As is the cab & firebox band lining.
The top of the chimney (capuchon?) looks different as well.

Thanks for that. I didn't know that any of the non-hybrids had survived to BR days. The Bulldog, with its domeless boiler, does look very little different from a City apart from the wheel size.
