The locos are due to work from Bo'ness to Carnforth on Monday & will no doubt sit there until working the train the following Sunday. Last year the Black 5s left the train at Manchester Victoria & headed back to Bury. To take the train back to Preston they would have to turn (& probably take water). As I recall it was a 47 dragged the train back to Preston.

If it's Victoria then I'm hopeful. What will the route be in the evening if it's Piccadilly? Out to Longsight, attach diesel, detach locos and reverse?

I can't see any engineering works that would affect the choice of Manchester station so Victoria it should be. Train times would be handy though.

Just shows how much I know. Just received my tickets. Preston 08:56, WNW 09:24, Manchester Piccadilly 10:38, Sheffield 12:43/13:29 Manchester Piccadilly 19:25, WNW 20:05, Preston 20:30. "Pathing constraints" via Victoria so no Platting Bank. Pity but looking forward to a good day, albeit a good proportion in the dark.

So, there shouldn't be any issue of a fire, considering were almost into November.

Network Rail in general might not, but who can predict what LNE and East Midlands zone might do.....?

One of the reasons given by NR for canelling steam tours during the summer fire brigade strike was the risk of having to call them out if a loco got into trouble and had to throw out its fire onto the lineside. Though rare it does happen - once a year, maybe?

For a fire to be thrown out it has to be pretty exceptional circumstances, typically either where you can't get any water into the boiler through failed injectors or due to the possibility of a collapsing firebox crown (due to lack of water and blowing a fusible plug). I don't think that happens too often, not even on heritage railways.

Could just be that by not having to have the crew bring the train down from Carnforth in the morning, it enables the tour to be done with one less crew change on the day?

If the tenders are topped up at Preston it may also provide the opportunity to reach Sheffield without stopping for water en route. This may not be possible with a Carnforth start.

We will have to wait for the timings to see if that is likely but they will no doubt be topped up.
