If you are going to travel on the ECML with steam then there is no more appropriate a locomotive than an A4 to do it with. Add the bonus of York to Newcastle and back and you have almost the perfect package.

This trip went well and kept to time. UoSA did what was asked and every now and again she stretched her legs a bit like the dash down through Croft Spa on the return. Not quite the 94+ plus of Bittern last December but quick nevertheless. The pathing could have been better but we know that it is a nightmare south of York. However, it was a bit disappointing that after our impressive climb against the collar up to the Ferryhill pathing stop we took our booked slow line route from Northallerton given the pace we were going at and the slightly late following service.

Anyway the day was a fitting tribute to the event fifty years earlier. Even Les Ross shot down Stoke on the main at a speed not all that dissimilar from what I gather UoSA did in 1964.

I wish I could have made it to see today's run.

On 24th October 1964 I was at Darlington MPD with three or four of my mates when 60009 went past on the northbound leg. I was aching even then because I knew that on that train was another of my mates who had won a pair of tickets through a painting competition sponsored by Zoom ice lollies. The contest required the painting of a line drawing of Mallard (published, I think in The Hotspur). I entered, doing what I thought was a good job in Brunswick green. My mate painted 60022 in blue.

    He won.

    Well done Kelvin.

At least you had a nice 'slow pass' shot at Durham. This was a good example of lazy signalling. Although we were supposed to have been on the fast, the road had been set for the following Manchester to Newcastle service so we trundelled through the station to the bemusement of all the waiting passengers who for a moment thought they were in for a treat! The same thing was done to us at Darlington and as a consequence the TP service was delayed and late into Newcastle. Despite that we kept to our booked running time having been released late from York.

It makes you smile that when it suites NR they can mess up the scheduled services as there is no doubt that had we been allowed to run down from Relly Mill we have been tucked up in Newcastle well before the stopper was due.

Yes indeed. Perhaps Mr Knowwun would like to reconsider his remarks.

My effort from down below at Digswell. I can't have been that far away from Nigel (5944) either.... Decided it was worth including some foliage above for extra silhouette.

Have to say, it's nice to be able to tick one of my "bucket list" shots off, finally!

    Cheers,

Windy?...that's not windy, take a look at the highest tower of Durham Cathedral at the start and you'll see a poor soul hanging onto the flagpole in a gale force wind scared s**tless!!
325 narrow steps up a spiral staircase, £5 for the privilege and what did I get................
no sun, a train that crawled past...........and possibly recurring nightmares for the rest of my life!

    "The Jubilee Requiem"

Oh, and after they prised me away from the flagpole and carried me back down I was awarded this.......

Yes, he shut off for a short distance to sort it all out. Hardly an issue given that we were trundling along at the time.
