As a Child I never really rated GW machines but now Im a tad older I have to say I do appreciate them a bit more, as said 2857 makes a fair bit of noise, and getting back on topic (Slightly) I believe it was a Newport engine at one point happy to be corrected be an appropiate visitor.

I remember 5224 at SSS1 accelerating off the bridge onto Berwyn bank back when the bridge was 5mph. It had 8 on and I was in the front window. It's the fastest i've ever accelerated behind a steam engine. It actually pulled me back.

Have known a couple of 28XXs to be impressive in very short bursts, but certainly not locos to be relied upon to make a noise on a pres line!

Generally agree that the 2-8-0s aren't guaranteed thrillers, but have also had a few experiences that have been exceptions to that rule. I too had a stunning run at Eardington bank behind 2857 when visiting the SVR mainly for that week's Cl.50 last May, and at the WSR Christmas gala a couple of years ago I had a front window behind 3850 and though it didn't rival Raveningham Hall for the highlight of the day, it certainly didn't lack noise or spectacle. Still awaiting a really good 2-8-0T run - 4277 and 5239 are never bad on the climbs out of Goodrington or Kingswear, but a Dartmouth visit is always much, much better if Lydham Manor is involved.

    Hello,
TVR 85 on the Worth Valley would be ideal.

    Hi,
Has any visiting engines been booked for the upcoming spring gala next year yet as no news has yet been released and they say that the line - up will be announced in late 2014.

If you can help shed some light on this topic it would help.

Many Thanks And With Kind Regards
    Zach Kirby

25 16 ton loaded coal wagons will also be good, as this will be approx the same length as a 10 coach train and the engines will have to work hard up Washford bank as the load will be approx 600 tons.

Where are they meant to get those from?!

It would be nice to see as many goods wagons as possible in the train at the Spring Gala though.

What do you expect from a 8F ?, will pull anything most preserved lines can chuck at them without breaking sweat, course a smaller loco working near it's limit will be louder.

2807 is fine enough in the right conditions, in my experience either tender first up washford bank or heading up from Bishops Cleeve to Gotherington with load 8 and a dead class 47 on the back.

    You need stainers improved version..
13 + an idling 47 on the mainline (not my video)

I suspect real noise won't be heard until a 28xx goes to the mid hants.. they strangle little great western engines until they squeal.

I imagine that the GCR might be prepared to hire their rake of 16T-ers out. The real problem I imagine would be getting the amount of coal required to fill the wagons.

I suppose you could do a bulk purchase of Loco coal and then store it until its used up, although isn't Loco coal about £120 / ton or more?

    Lovely idea though......;)

2807 should have left the NYMR by now, heading back to the GWSR after 5 weeks up north. Originally booked for 15 or so days it's ended up doing 29 I think. The shed staff love it! Very hard to break a gw 28! I Did owners rep early in the visit and we took 7 up the 1:49 on half regulator and cut off at 45% or less. Made it look easy. For haulage capability it beats staniers improved 8f hands down.

You can still make an engine make noise, even if it's on it's own, the GW 2.8.0's just don't ever seem to make much!

Nunney Castle was much louder on the NYMR than 2807 although both weren't particularly taxed.

How about the low loader fee to move all those wagons? 2 wagons per low loader? I think there are 16 windcutters so that's 8 trips each way! That's a lot of cash for a few photos ultimately.
