Work has begun on site to construct a new £3.2m Tyne and Wear Metro station at Simonside in South Tyneside.

The new light rail station, which will be the 60th on the Metro network, is due to be completed by the autumn and will offer fast and frequent services to South Shields, Newcastle and beyond.

Contractor Balfour Beatty began work on the site, which is immediately west of Wenlock Road, next to St Simon’s Church, after the first turf was officially cut by the Mayor of South Tyneside, Cllr Ed Malcolm.
