I think this was a private charter from York to Rochdale and if my memory is working ok the date was 28th September 1983.

    Thanks Alan

With the date you gave me I have found it on Sixbells site now

A private charter (which I think was to do with a company in Rochdale signing a contract, but not necessarily a railway related contract) hauled throughout by former MR compound 1000".

    Loco(s) Route
    1000 York - Todmorden - Rochdale
    1000 Rochdale - Batley - York

I think it was actually organized and run by the Ford Motor Company.

    No, that was another job.

I was a steward on the Rochdale job and still have the details somewhere in the loft. When I get 5 minutes I'll
try and find them and confirm who the job was for.

Ok chaps, I've found the details.

The train was run on behalf of Railfreight and The Chemical Industries Association and took Railfreight representatives,
wagon hiring companies representatives and their guests from York to the Standard Railway Wagon Co. Ltd at Heywood.

No. 1000 hauled the train to Rochdale from where the passengers went by coach to Heywood.

1000 then took the ECS to Redbank sidings in Manchester and was turned on the Miles Platting triangle. She then brought the ECS back to Rochdale to pick up the punters and worked the train back to York.

The driver was Jim Melia, a well known Holbeck man at the time, who treated us to some stunning performances over the
    the S&C with 46229.

I remember on the way back we were platformed at Leeds City and after we had left I walked through the train and spotted a well known gricer / neverer hanging out of one of the door windows! He didn't realise that I knew him and when I asked him why he was on the train he said he had asked one of the station staff at Leeds the time of the next train to York and was told it was ours --- yeah right!

The guard came along and asked him for his ticket. Of course he hadn't got one, so he was gripped for the full fare. When he realised that we had rumbled him as a gricer he was even persuaded to make a donation to SLOA funds!!

I believe the trip was in connection with signing a contract with Standard Wagon Company at Heywood. The passengers detrained at Rochdale but the train ran forward to Red Bank sidings in Manchester. The loco turned either at Red Bank or Newton Heath before working back to Rochdale and York with the stock.

Lets see it out on the mainline again please why cant we have this double heading with a Jub up and down the Midland instead of spending huge ammounts of money bringing the A4s over. This coupling would fill every train .Thats something I would give my money to. can anyone tell me why steam trips dont use the Midland that often as it has no wires after Bedford northbound and very little frieght.A trip I was on on the return with Oliver Cromwell used the mainline and climbing Sharnbrook bank was orgasmic.
