there seems to be a lot of interest with regard to these two.

I wonder if we could try to piece together some info on their working lives.

my contribution would only relate to sightings on the WCML in the late '50s . others , i'm sure could offer much more info on the subject gec-alstom-ivatt-twins-euston.jpg

There is a lot of information in published material. My 4 main sources are English Electric Main Line Diesel Locomotives by Brian Webb (pub David & Charles 1976 ISBN 0 7153 7158 4); Diesel Locomotives of the LMS by JWP Rowledge (pub Oakwood Press 1975 as Locomotive Papers No 88); LMS Diesel Locomotives and Railcars by EV Richards (pub RCTS 1996) and The Diesel Impact on British Rail by RM Tufnell (pub Mechanical Engineering Publications 1979 ISBN 0 85298 438 3). Sadly my personal experience of seeing them was a trip to Roade in May 1959 when I saw all 5 LMS Diesels at work and D210 on Willesden - Northampton driver training and later sightings were on Willesden shed stabled or stored and Derby works when in store.

As many have noted their loss to preservation is immeasurable despite many of the features being carried forward onto later locomotive classes including the Woodhead EM2 locomotives. The contribution of 10000 / 1 to later BR diesel locomotive designs alone made them worthy of preservation.

Like certain other classes, these were fitted with nose doors so that crews could get from one loco to the other whilst the train was moving.
Was use EVER made of that facility please?

Roade provided a unique experience for me too - my lone sighting of an APT-P in service: 370 006 City Of Derby.

10001 (corrected) certainly spent some time on the lines from Marylebone. I can't currently find the picture of it at Gt Missenden but have attached one north west of Princes Risborough taken on 15/04/1965 scan0054.jpg

I have seen a photo ( on t'internet) of the 'twins' coupled up to the dynamometer car, both locos had there nose corridor connections coupled ( like a small coach corridor...) and there was an adaptor plate coupling the second loco to the dynamometer corridor bellows.... I will have to seach that one out again...

I've corrected my original post. Unfortunately I had taken the scan from a large print with only a date written on it but have now found the original small prints on which my now deceased brother (who was much older than me) had written details. See attached scan of the backs of two pictures from that film and of the other picture. The dates and film numbers he kept seem to substantiate 1965. Apologies if I created confusion by thinking it was 10000 when in fact it is 10001 which may have been withdrawn later.

Didn't one of either 10000/10001 get scrapped by Cox & Danks Ltd at Acton(?).

The clue is in the full title "Wigan Warriors RLFC", hence the attempt at humour, which was evidently completely wasted on you lot around here (stomps off muttering) .....

For the record, my local team's official title remains Brighton FC, as it's one of the surviving original clubs dating from before codification of the rules formally seperating rugger from footy. After 149 years, you'd have expected them to have got the hang of the bl--dy game!

The irony that they got taken to the scrapyard by a steam locomotive they were supposed to be replacing was not wasted on people.

    Which engine had the duty?

Correct, not sure but I think it was moved to a siding at Willesden then scrapped by Cox & Danks on site.
