Seen it once, many moons ago around 1978/9. As I recall it had been scraped back for a repaint which I found disappointing as I'd hoped it had been left in 'as withdrawn' condition.

This loco was exhibited outside in Tiverton for a few years post preservation so its "as withdrawn" condition disappeared a long time ago. Fortunately it is now nicely tucked up inside away from the elements. As I recall it was delivered to Tiverton under its own steam around the 1965/6 time & has been there ever since.

Now it has this thread the timer is set on just how little time will elapse before there are calls for it to be taken out of the museum & steamed no doubt closely followed by a debate about livery etc etc!!

As there are another 3 of these (1420 under overhaul at Buckfastleigh; 1450 in service currently on the SVR & 1466 currently the subject of an appeal for overhaul funds by the GWS at Didcot) this particular one is best left just where it is for future generations.

From what I can remember from 25 odd years ago, it was in as condition as it was last steamed but had been exhibited to a very high standard.Taking photograghs was very difficult inside the building along with loads of railwayana of the railways of around the Tiverton Area.I believe it is owned by a private Indivual ( I have his name somewhere) and was under the understanding that it was never to be steamed while he had cusdodial control over itl. This may have changed now but what a delight it would be to see all four standing side by side somewhere.Great Idea about the POLL.

I saw a pic of it somewhere that suggested the current museum had been partially built around it.

EDIT oh here we go - google provides as always

Hmm I think that may have been an old pic, this one from 2011 shows a different display format with the ability to go on the footplate. Looks a whole lot more crowded though and doesn't really 'show it off'

To be honest, I think Mid Devon is crying out for a standard gauge preserved line, and 1442 could easily be the star attraction.

As a child, I phoned up the museum and suggested just such a thing... to be honest they deserved a medal for their patience that day.
