Hi in the 1948 locomotive exchanges 34004 yeovill was fitted will with a stanier tender for work on the highland lines. So as everyone knows Southern steam engines did not have water scoops fitted to their thenders dew to the short distances that the southern railway engines worked. So when 34004 Yeovill was fitted with a LMS stanier tender with a water scoop, was this the only time from 1923 when the Southern railway was formed to until the end of southern steam under BR, that a Southern steam loco had a water scoop fitted to it's own tender or like 34004 paired with another Companys tender that had a water scoop already fitted.

    Regards Josh

34004 was not the only Southern engine to run with a Stanier tender during the 1948 locomotive exchanges. Four other Bulleid Pacifics working on other regions lines in 1948 also used them for the tests:

    34005 St Pacras - Manchester
34006 Marylebone - Manchester and Bristol - Plymouth
35017 Kings Cross - Leeds and Euston - Carlisle
    35019 Paddington - Plymouth

Also which locos borrowed larger tenders when working on the SR routes where water troughs weren't available? I recall reading that the Princess Coronation ran with a WD tender, were there any other swaps?

Cecil J Allen's book about the locomotive exchanges depicts both "Royal Scot" 46154 and Pacific 46236 working the Atlantic Coast Express paired with the WD tender.
There is also a photograph of 34006 "Bude" paired with a Stanier tender on a Plymouth-Bristol train.

Josh, there are two books about the locomotive exchanges, both by Cecil J Allen and published by Ian Allen, published around 1950, both can be sourced on one of the secondhand book sites for just a few pounds if you want to research the subject further.

The titles are: "The Locomotive Exchanges 1870-1948" and "New Light On The Locomotive Exchanges".
