    News from uk-rail

47.815 and 57.314 have both failed on 5Z57 Carnforth to Cardiff Central. Loco off 6G64 to assist to Craven Arms loop.
Probably safe to say that the Northern Belle from Cardiff to Windsor and Eton Riverside today isn’t going to run!

Unfortunate to have to turn up at Cardiff Central for an 05:48 departure to find out it was not happening.

Best not to do things by halves is it? Sad for the travellers though.

How bizarre to have two locos fail together!

I wonder what a FTR exam for a diesel looks like? Oil and water I guess...

Which is more than most if not all of us do before setting off on a day out by car.

Very true, but of course my car breaking down usually doesn't affect hundreds of passengers, with possible further large knock-on disbenefits.

I am led to believe they did not actually fail together which I thought seemed bizarre Only second hand but I believe one failed at Shrewsbury and the other (which had run round) at Craven Arms, both had different issues.

OK so I know this is taking it a bit far but breaking down on a busy 'smart' motorway could cause delays to a lot of people, particularly if two lanes had to be closed to get rescue to you.
As an aside, not sure if have heard this correctly but the RAC and AA etc will not turn out to such breakdowns as they consider the risk to their drivers unacceptable.

It sounds as though the only risk to West Coast drivers may be the suspect rail-worthiness of the diesel they are assigned to.

It's ok - don't panic. I know that these beauties are heritage traction as well and it's possibly even more complicated to pre-guess when they might go wrong compared with steam.

I've noticed these days they often put a steam loco on the front of the train to act as insurance. 47813 had some contraption called "Clan Line" on the front the other day - from what I hear, it did most of the work too! :)
