2014 - Summer Outdoor Week Achievements and Thanks

    A Big Thank You


    Over the 9 days of Summer Outdoor Week 2014 much was achieved by the 29 (30)attendees who gave 136.5 (131.5) people days worth of effort and help to the Talyllyn Railway – last years figures in brackets. The gang was very international with members from Australia, Netherlands and the USA.

    Please see the details of what was achieved below.

    Wharf South Side

    • Creation of a concrete walkway across the track to the Gunpowder shed
    • Work on the turntable
    • Rationalisation of the services adjacent to Llechfan
    • Removal of the remaining turnouts alongside the hedge

    Wharf

    • A further load of a 100 plus second-hand jarrah sleepers were brought down from Quarry Siding to top up the for disposal stacks

    Wharf - Pendre

    • The lineside was strimmed to complete the sections the flail mower cannot manage
    • A line inspection was carried out

    Pendre - Ty Mawr

    • Strimming at Pendre
    • Lineside strimming to east of the rail stacks

    Ty Mawr to Rhydyronen

    • Bramble removal
    • Flail mower work

    Rhydyronen

    • Strimming between milepost 2 and Tynllwyn caravan site gate
    • Hedge cutting
    • Station painting including lime washing the waiting area walls

    Rhydyronen to Brynglas

    • Flail mowing & bramble removal

    Brynglas

    • Lime washing the waiting area walls
    • Strimming between the stop boards
    • Removal of problem overhanging branches
    • Improving sight lines

    Brynglas to Dolgoch

    • Some bramble removal
    • Line inspection between milepost 4 and Dolgoch
    • Dug out a length and a half between west of the under bridge near 4 ¾ milepost
    • Re-ballasted the above length with the available ballast
    • Painting the viaduct handrails
    • Drainage work
    • Vegetation clearance and removal of the arisings

    Dolgoch to Quarry Siding

    • Line inspection
    • Bramble clearance
    • Delivery of 55 drilled sleepers

    Quarry Siding

    • Loaded and drilled 143 sleepers ready for next winter's work

    Quarry Siding to Abergynolwyn

    • Line inspection
    • Bramble clearance
    • Overhanging branch removal
    • Removal of excess lineside growth
    • Drainage work

    Abergynolwyn

    • Painting the east and west ends of the awning
    • Cleaning half of the underside of the awning
    • Painting the green around the windows and doors
    • Staining the palings each side of the steps
    • Staining the hand rails on the steps and approach path
    • Staining the doors on the old toilet block in the car park
    • Staining 99% of the low level station
    • Cleaned the signal in the play area
    • Strimming in the station, drive, car park and play areas
    • Overhanging branch removal
    • Removal of excess lineside growth
    • Improving signal sight lines
    • Painting the timetable sign uprights in the drive

    Abergynolwyn to Nant Gwernol

    • Line inspection
    • Bramble removal
    • Drainage work

    Nant Gwernol

    • Drainage work
    • Delivery of 88 drilled sleepers

    Plus all the tasks I have overlooked
