I know British India Line is not at Portland now, as I was there about 3 weeks ago. But where she is now I have no idea

This is the one Ian Riley has become involved with, and I'd guess it head to his works at Bury if anywhere.

If Steam Railway is to be believed then Ian Riley has bought her and plans to restore her after 35009 is complete. I think 35018's frames are going to be used on 35009 and 35009's on 35018. I think 35018 is the one thats going to be painted British Railways lined black with early crest and 35009 is to be painted BR Express Blue.

Surely if they are swapping frames it would be 35018 to emerge first with 35009's bits bolted on ?.

Woulden't mind seeing another Blue one, inauthentic as it was it looked good on 35005.

I agree 35005 looked great in BR Blue. I think its what the article said but can't remember too well now.

Silly question time - couldn't you just put the streamlined casing back on, over the top? You keep the walschaerts and everything else that was changed, bar the running plate and cladding; obviously inaccurate but you get a feel for the engine as built.

    Or is that too silly?

Is 35018 the one owned by the same chap as owns 42859, the Cinderella Crab? Any ideas what is happening with her? I would have thought such a sensibly sized and easy maintenance loco would at least have a group working towards its restoration by now, even considering the state it's in.

I don't think they were owned by the same people, they just happened to share the same disused airfield at one time.

so where is 35018 heading now, can anyone at Bury conferm that she has been bought by Ian Riley, i understood that it was not quite a done deal yet if he has now taken ownership i would think that 35018 would be an easier return to steam as she should have most of her parts

Which would all have to come off for overhaul and could thus as easily be refitted to 35009 ...

most of which were already overhauled or new , she was quite advanced when she moved to portland but i cant estemate how much damage the period in open storage might have done

Agreed, i find it difficult see how 35009`s frames that stood out in the open stripped at Swindon for at least 2-3 years are in any better condition than those of 35018.

Perhaps the sea air on Portland has taken its toll and undone a lot of the good work done at the MHR.

But i suppose once 35018 arrives at Bury, Ian Riley and his team will give it a detailed inspection and only then the way forward will be decided, the current publicised plan may change, who knows?
