Does anyone have any more information on this loco? Last I heard (back in the autumn) was that it was destined for Carnforth and restoration by WCR... but all seems to have gone quiet since then.
Is it still at MRC or has it moved to Carnforth?

    Many thanks in advance,
    Eliot

I think it's been at Carnforth for a while now, I think the question is how long before we see it running a train...

Maybe at the end of 2009 we will have a plethora of Black 5's... 44806, 45212, 45231, 45305, 45337, 45379, 45407 & 44932 all operational with more on the way...

Thats the time we want Carnforth to do a gala, invite a few standards and add the 8f...

Will any of them be in BR Unlined black, or LMS ?

If you're lucky you might be able to add 45428 to that list - its supposed to be getting close to a steam test.

Certianly would hope to add 45428 during 2009. I believe Ian Riley hopes to have 44871 out by the Autumn and Ian Storey 44767 in the 2nd half of the year. All 3 locos had backhead made as part of a larger batch, possibly including some of the others steaming this year.

In fact, I can only think of 5000 and 5025 that have steamed in preservation and, if all goes according to plan, won't be in steam by the end of 2009, along with most ex-Barry "5s" - as far as i can think, only 45379 is anywhere near of the ex-Barry locos but I could be wrong.

I think that you could add 5110 to that list

its definately still there, and I'm going on thurs to see three engines in steam on Carnforth UDGL AT 08.30am when 2 black fives arrive (45231+45407) just before 46115 Scots Guardsman departs for Preston although the timings are close if you check uksteam, but I'll see if can get an update and post back here.

then of course it'll be three steamers over shap and beattock within an hour, good day thursday.

Although I am not connected with the company it is a good bet WCRC will get 44932 up to the West Highlands some time this year, that being the target I have been advised recently by people with good factual knowledge of the situation. 48151 (heavy gen) is being worked on as well as 44932; both will be running before 45699 I believe, one maybe using the Jub tender. Not an official statement by any means but good 'hearsay' for what its worth.

Does anyone recall the earlier career of 44932 in preservation? The reason I ask is that I have just been given a large 16 x 10 photo of it leaving Lincoln, it's in BR lined black with BRITISH RAILWAYS on the tender.

    Cheers
    Dave

I have a Black 5 vHS, recently done to a recorded DVD of which the loco appears in BRITISH RAILWAYS lined livery, hauling the Queen of Scots coaches in, I think, Scotland in the early 90s. Then seen double heading somewhere with 48151 and hauling what was at the time its only Main Line run according to the narrator.

I believe 44932 has had 10 year runs in preservation,
The first was post 1968 at Carnforth, when it was BR lined black as it finished BR service, then later repained into BR lined Passenger Green ! - mid 1970's.
In the mid-1980s 44932 returned as a Butterley based engine this time in BR lined Black with "BRITISH RAILWAYS" on the tender.

I recall a series of Derby to Manchester Victoria via the Hope Valley runs c1988 operated with 44932 and 48151

I think it did a Jacobite season sometime in the late 1980s or early 1990s. I have seen photographs of it at Mallaig when I was very young.

She hauled one of the Carnforth - Barrow 'return to steam' specials in September 1972 - smokebox out and tender first back. Never forget that day - everyone at 'Steamtown' was thrilled to be back on the mainline !!

.. and not to forget 44932 working a series of trains from Southport in November 1985 when working a programme of Sunday Southport - Manchester and Southport - Wigan shuttles.

Plus - in August (I think) 1972 she ran light engine from Carnforth - Morecambe Promenade and was kept in light steam there for several days as an exhibit in the 'Morecambe Rail Fair.' 44871 did the same thing the year before (in light steam) but was dragged (allegedly ;)) by a class 25.

Also did at least one Derby-Sheffield loop in the early 90s. These usually had one loco from Didcot - Derby and then either 53809 or 44932 on the Derby - Sheffield circle.
