I read on a Gen group that 8F 48151 has arrived at Shrewsbury at 14:10 this afternoon and will run to Abbey Foregate and then back through the station to Coton Hill for servicing. Then back to stable overnight in the station sidings.

Tomorrow Thursday train arrives from Wakefield at 1125 behind Class 47 as 1Z56.
    48151
    Shrewsbury 1151
    Aberystwyth 1450 - 1602
    Shrewsbury 1904

    where the 47 is re-attached.

I see nothing on UKsteam.info, but peeps are reporting today's engine move.
Hope it's some use to somebody in the area.

Has someone actually managed to get the ERTMS gubbins down to a size that will fit on to or under the footplate of a steam loco?
I'm sure the whole industry will be agog to know.

Nope. Private charter. Keep an eye on http://www.uksteam.info/tours/trs10.htm#apr

ERTMS tests only take place after dark, after the last service train has run, and not when ATW are running their 158s around the place. The live section for tests is between Harlech and Porthmadog these days anyway.

This is very useful info, thank you

Where will 48151 be on the way back to Shrewsbury tomorrow (front/rear) and which way will she be facing? Be very nice to see her after school!

    Cheers, Lewis

OOPs, saw it in steam at carnforth last night, should have posted, but there's been several engines in steam there over the last 5 or 6 days. was told it'll go to york after a tour tomorrow for saturday's tour.
62005 is due to go to the north east very soon I was also told, but it wasn't in steam this afternoon.
also saw 45231 having its tubes seen to today, was told it may be late for start of fort william season so 62005 will go alone. this is just what I was told today,

Running chimney first from Aberystwyth so it seems. Was turned on the triangle at SBJ prior to parking at Abbey Foregate under Monkmoor Road for the night.

It looks like it will be heading the return right through to Wakefield, then engine+coach onto York NRM.

That's an unusual formation - 2 brake/support vehicles in the middle and what are theoretically passenger cars at each end - presumably the Hadrian Bar is on for staff use as a bar only, being at the back? I suspect this is a very select train for a very few people!

Just saw the train arrive in Aber bang on time. I got quite a shock when I saw it roll past my office as I wasn't expecting it at all. Presumably this is the first 8F to Aber?

I would have thought so, the Cambrian was hardcore GWR territory - Manors, Prairies and Dukedogs galore... :)

    Times are now on uksteam.info
Looks like the 8f is heading the train all the way back to Wakefield - please correct me if I am wrong

The first 8F on the Canbrian maybe, but not the first to Aber. A pair of 8Fs nos 48309 and 48728 were used on the Royal Train from Milford Haven via Carmarthen to Aberystwyth and back in August 1956.

Intersting, these were the pair that were fitted with steam heating weren't they? Why did 8F's haul the train up to Aber, not really Stanier territory is it?

The train left Aber about 15 mins late. Got everyone in my office looking out of the window as it stormed out of the station! Shame we don't get steam on the main line here more often.

A pair of Manors were originally intended for the Royal train between Carmarthen to Aberystwyth, but the train was very heavy, and the powers-that-be decided it demanded more power (eg for the long 1 in 40 Llanilar bank). All the larger GWR locos were banned because of cylinder clearances, so this Western Region-based pair of 8Fs were used. They were both steam heat fitted as they were sometimes also used for passenger services on the Central Wales line. Incidentally a GWR 28xx 2-8-0 was once tried between Carmarthen and Aberystwyth, but it was deemed too tight for regular use.

Anyway good to see 48151 in action on the Cambrian. There hasn't been much steam to Aber in recent years.

48151 set fire to the lineside shrub at Borth golf course on the way to Aber, and it took the fire brigade some time to extinguish both blazes. I'll have photos soon. I've been told today's little excursion was a WCRC staff day out.
