    hi

I'm looking to video 5043 going up shap on the outward journey. Anyone got a good locations with good access? I'll be going on train to Penrith or Oxenholme and either cycling or transport.

Have a look at some of the videos and photos posted on here for other Shap trips over the last year or two, and search for the places mentioned on Streetmap.co.uk or Google Maps. You'll see there's lots of choice around Greenholme, Shap Wells, Scout Green, etc. I believe Shap Wells can be reached by bus from Penrith.

A lot has changed on the coast since March though, not least with one of the loco hauled services taking up what would previously have been the path used by a southbound tour. Plus it's coming from Tyseley not Euston so it can get up here quicker.

It's a seriously boring 3 hours and 40 minute journey southbound down the coast. The trip's only worth doing for the rarity of a Castle over Grayrigg and Shap. Will probably use the £7.60 advance single I got for the 1510 to Crewe and get home a reasonable time.

Each to his own, but I enjoyed my trip that way in June last year.

A subjective view obviously, but once you get South of Workington (ish) the coastal scenery and sharp curves on the line can make for a a really interesting, although leisurely journey. Especially so if the weather is good.

The tickets and times went via 1st Class post Tuesday, so everyone should have had them in today's post at the latest. The train is VERY full, so if you are not booked on already, then sorry.

5043 will be taking 10 coaches over Shap and around the coast. 47773 is planned to come off and remain at Carnfoth. On the return journey, 47773 will rejoin at Carnforth at the front of the train to act as the pilot all the way back to Tyseley.

Having done the coast with Scots Guardsman last year, because of the various restrictions etc it can still be a noisy trip as keeping to the schedule requires some enthusiastic driving.

The Earl shall give every other locomotive except the Duchess perhaps a run for their money as to how Shap should be done.

Difficult to know how good 5043 actually is on the route when it only takes 10. The 'norm' for a Class 7 is 11.

I am intrigued to know why the diesel is being attached to the front on the way back. Is it lack of route knowledge on the Castle crew? Surely if not, it should be on the back? In fact, why is the diesel there at all?

This is not intended to be controversial but simple questions that I would welcome answers to, if possible because I think Vintage Trains are a great outfit with great tours, but normally their locomotives set out their business without diesel pilots.

Tangmere is today booked to run almost 300 miles all on its own on the busy Great Western mainline and without a diesel in sight. Now that's what I like to see.

I think it's simply that 5043's work will have been completed by the time they get back to Carnforth. They could leave her to follow light later, but that's extra cost and man-hours. Better to leave her in the train, in steam but not assisting (much), and get everyone home at a decent hour, including the crews.

Considering it's already a C.1030pm finish at Tyseley with the diesel factor in 1 or 2 water stops if the Castle was solo (I assume she can get back without water with the pilot) it stops an already long day not being ridiculous whilst also saving on a light path back south.
