£10mn for the prototype and £2.5mn each after...

Unfortunately I dont see this happening on a commerical level, maybe an eccentric millionaire, or a grant from Gordon, but even then it's never going to make money on that level.

I'd tend to agree, but I'm not sure how they arrive at £10m when Tornado was "only" £3m, even allowing for inflation over the build period (which was pretty low).

The price seems high but may not be that far out, Tornado was a copy of an existing design, of which many designs already existed, and if not, many could be researched from 60532 or 4472 or from first hand knowledge.. this is a new engine, has no designs to fall back on, and therefore everything is new design, research and testing... It's this that makes it exciting, personally though i'd rather it be a proposed BR Standard 8F 2-8-2 with an 8 wheel "improved" BR standard tender..the 5AT looks more like a Bulleid designed BR standard 5 with American influences. :brushteeth:

I take you point, but you can do an awful lot of CAD design for £7m, even at full comercial rates. I wonder how much of the budget is for testing and development, but even then it looks high to me.

However, much better that people are realistic and also have some contingency built in, rather than end up looking silly whan the job goes way over budget as per so many loco re-builds etc.
