Sadly, following 60007's failure with valve problems at Heaton on Thursday 22 November, the engine has been withdrawn from all its main line comitments for the rest of the year. Its next booked train is on Sunday 28 April 2013 on the Great Britain VI. I presume it will return to Grosmont as soon as arrangements can be made.

It seems likely that 60009 and 60019 will pick up 60007's bookings in December although this has yet to be confirmed.

Seemed most sensible place to post this although I suspect its on here somewhere already that I have missed, posted on the SNG Facebook page over the weekend...

SNGLT advised members yesterday that Sir Nigel Gresley will be moved to the workshops of the National Railway Museum at York for its 10 year overhaul. The work will be carried out by the SNGLT group and not the NRM. The decision was taken primarily because of the availability of excellent engineering facilities which are expected to speed the overhaul. Carrying out the work at the NRM does not preclude a return to the NYMR post overhaul in fact it is presently the intention of SNGLT that Sir Nigel Gresley will run on the NYMR after the overhaul along with mainline tours and visits to other heritage railways.

Just passing on what it says I have no link to the group apart from wishing them the best of luck for no lurking nasties on strip down.

Congratulations to the NRM for both offering the overhaul facilities and providing potential opportunities for Engineering Apprenticeships that could be of value to the railway industry.

Makes sense with the NRM not overhauling much at the moment (guessing due to Flying Scotsman). Great opportunity to see two "A4"s, one complete and one in bits as well.

What? It clearly states the overhaul will be conducted by SNGLPT, not the NRM. They're just providing the facilities, which are a hell of a lot better than those available at Grosmont!

Hmm. I think you need to reread the SNGLPT statement regarding who will be doing the work.

Edit - Just seen 5944's similar post.

Isn't the point, perhaps, that a skilled group without facilities gets the chance to share its expertise with an organisation that has publicly said to be short in that department? Quid pro quo for mutual benefit? Splendid arrangement which if successful could be the first of routine renting of NRM works, income + experience and knowledge gained. Very enterprising.

Also York is probably more accessible than Grosmont for working members

It's not really an ideal line for an A4 to be in routine use either.

The NRM has a big workshop with little going on, and the overhaul will provide them with an extra exhibit. Grosmont shed is full of engines under overhaul with more on the way so it is better all round for it to go to York, but I hope it will once again be based at Grosmont when it is finished. We need something special to pull our teak coaches!

Back this up, the magazine gives a deeper understanding of the issues that occurred, the shed space being taken by another loco, and to me, a great move going to the NRM.

A great decision on so many levels, well done all!!!

I agree completely and if No.7 gets back into steam earlier than anticipated...even better.
