Wikipedia is largely self moderating, but most of it's content is put up by "anyone" with Internet access...
I have edited several pages myself and submitted pictures on several topics, but the problem is anyone else can change it to their own view.. I know of one topic, where the owners of one heritage item change "history" in order to promote it, despite evidence to the contrary, they have then gone further and used wiki as an authoritative source on their own web page... Tut tut tut.
I know one picture I submitted to wiki was lifted and used in a proposal by an engineering company for a civil engineering contract!

The difference between the forum and wiki.. Is disputes are there for everyone to read..with wiki, someone changes the main page with little or no debate..(though full history of changes can be seen, it's often lost to most users)

    Any way back to topic

I've changed things on there as well but someone comes along and changes some of your words even if your correct.

As you say back on topic. Hopefully the problems with 6100 can be fixed quickily and have her and 46115 running together.

    Lord Nelson?

Another sorry saga, which for one reason or another, the details of the problems it had were never revealed.

if the loco in question is 850, what it does show is that whilst everyone knows about MT276, or what ever its called now i would guess that its just a paper exercise with little or no real examination of the fit of major items it seems to rest on the person who is heading the restoration team to get it done right, but not every railway has the same standards, some workshops such as bury or bridgenorth and ropley amonst others i would guess pay more attension to clearances and how things are put back together because the same loco will be used on their railway and any problems would soon show up as increased wear and tear resulting in a need to stop that loco at some stage when they are already very busy with overhauls

Yep. The folks of Ropley MPD could not believe some of the things they found.

Cant help but think that someone else is now creaming off the money on this job!
Sure there were issues with certain aspects of this overhaul, but surely they could have easily been put right and a lot quicker too.
To say that the boiler is being lifted to inspect the valve gear and frames is nothing short of a joke, especially when you consider that bottom end overhauls with the boiler in were an everyday thing years ago. And several organisations are still capable of this today.
Given all the problems with 70000 since overhaul to date and 70013's persistant problems with firebox repairs that were recently carried out in the same place that no one hears about, people in glass house's comes to mind here............

    By whom, and when?

I actually thought, when I heard about the boiler lift, it could indicate more problems than have otherwise been reported. Like Flying Scotsman, you simply don't know the extent of the problems until you have to take it apart...

You would hope that the new owners/custodians would have had a fully independent survey carried out at some stage as the zeros on the estimate started to increase?

I dont see any evidence at all of anyone creaming money off it - its going to be travelling at 75mph on the mainline, so given all the doubts about the quality of the restoration it seems only proper to make sure there arent any hidden surprises lurking unseen. Just like the GWSR and their embankments, there's only one way of doing it - properly.

Strong words, Jim, but you may well be right.... Certainly not alone in that opinion.

I wouldn't have given the "creaming off" notion any thought whatsoever until very recently. However, during a chance meeting a couple of weeks or so ago, someone raised concern about what they perceived as going on in another area of activity at the centre concerned and one notion can lead to another. Those 7xxxx, can't now help but wonder.

Re 70013's problems- Are you sure that it is the repair that is the problem? It could well be the state of the inner firebox itself.

The latest problems with 70000 are nothing to do with work carried out by LNWR, The problems are down to work carried out elsewhere!

Isn't it strange that when ever a loco's problems become a bit controversial the majority of posts about it are along the lines of "somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody told me"?
Until the proverbial horses mouth makes a magical appearance on the forum a very large pinch of salt should be taken when reading this sort of thread.:)

Strange! As the loco had just been overhauled by LNWR I would not have thought that someone else would have done work on a problem without first notifying LNWR of the problem, ie wouldn't the LNWR work be under some kind of guarantee? Any answers anyone?

im i right in guessing that some of this work was contracted out to third parties , because im sure that those of us who are, or have been up the sharp end have seen contract work that has had to be redone, at some stage because it did not match the standards that your workshop work to, normally contract jobs are done to a cost, and you only get what you pay for, whats the old saying , you pay peanuts you get monkeys? unfortunatly, you also can get ripped off , you pay for a preimier job but get the budget one instead

Im not sure if LNW were made aware of the problem or not, but the work carried out by another party and Not LNW has caused the current problem with 70000. so therefore the critics should focus there attentions elsewhere...... However Its such a shame that all this has to be said in such a manner, as surely we all share the same intrest and goals of see locos out there working as they were designed too, All the Steam workshops in my opinion do a great job, wether its the Mainline companys like LNW and Ian Riley right down to Brookside Garden Steam Railway wether paid or voluntary.......

    Unfortunately I did speculate this over a year ago..on Feb 3rd 2010.

I guess we have to believe that enough money will see an amazing job. I feel sorry for the one writing the cheque.
However the silver lining (or is it red and gold lining) is 6100 will have reset boiler ticket if heard correctly ?
