    Hi all

Does anyone know anything about the Duke moving to Crewe? Word is that one of the guys who runs it was there talking about LNWR maintaining it for them.

Knowing what they charge at Crewe, the Duke must have got a moneybags on board as it hasn't been earning any money for quite some time, what with its unreliability!! Shame as it used to be a great loco!!

Looking at the website its the Trust who are responsible for it. I guess they own it but it also seems to be in Ian Rileys place as well.

Without any official announcement from either Crewe or the 71000 group I can't see why this has arisen. It seems it is nothing more than an unsubstantiated roumer?

71000 back at ELR in Oct and already sorting dates out for ELR in 2011- according to nuelr forum - some main line runs for 2011 will be off Crewe but in terms of being based there the op has perhaps not heard correctly.

That is what we had heard at Crewe, i.e. the loco only being there when required for runs out of Crewe.

As WCRC have declined to operate 71000, who will use it for the mainline wherever it is based?

Sorry. I might not have made it clear. If it is true, which I understand is getting firmed up (but agree it is a rumour until such time as it is confirmed), I think it is great news that the group who run 71000 are getting some help overcoming what seems to be a never ending set of failures (and that is also no disrespect to Ian Riley). Failures seem to have dogged the Duke for the past few years - since she was overhauled last time. I can remember her when she was a star player in the 90s and just wonder what went wrong?

And how great for Crewe to have an icon back!

It has been, and presumably will continue to be, operated by DBS, just like Tornado.

given how reluctant some people are to use it for mainline running, I'd have thought that keeping it on the ELR where it could get regular runs would be a bonus

I'd also be concerned that Standard Pacifics seem to be going into Crewe and not coming back, at least on the dates announced

Oh dear, it would appear that the rumour is exactly that, no truth in it, whatsoever.

I think to describe the Duke's problems as a 'never ending set of failures' is a bit harsh... When a well-meaning soul puts a scotch on a wheel just prior to a move without telling anyone it's not exactly a problem with the loco to start with! The 'Duke' has had less failures than many...

Playing devils advocate but there seems to be an interesting switch in the railway movement towards LNWR as an engineering base of choice / overhaul contractors than other business' that have perhaps enjoyed that position.

Other excellent engineering facilities are available !
