As is posted on the galas section, 78019 from the GCR will be visiting Embsay for the Steam Gala. Understandably, it has been limited to 4 coaches (it is a standard 2).

Does anyone have any information as to these locos usual limits in everyday traffic under BR, and whether or not there were any exceptional circumstances?

On a slightly different matter, does anyone know the specific limitations of the Skipton-Ilkley line - I can't find anything in writing! Bear in mind the slog out of Skipton...

    Cheers,
    Tim

who has applied the load limits ? GCR or yourselves

considering I've been behind an Ivatt version on 8 over 2 miles of 1 in 100 i'm curious .

8 is a big load for a Class 2 Martin. Obviously doable but not exactly what the Class 2 locos were built for.
Saw a GWR 14xx on 12 at the SDR in 1974 - railtour ecs - but I wouldn't use that as an example of what their load limit was.

GCR imposed - no problems with that. Just interested in what the locos are capable of / history behind the limits.

    By comparison...
    16" Hunslet with 12 on, and a 4F on the back (1992?)

I posted your request on a Yahoo group and here is an answer.

"The class were allowed 180 tons (say five corridor coaches and a van)
between Skipton and Ilkley (and on to Guiseley). Five tons more in the
    down direction."

Not sure if there were any heavy gradients other than the climb out of Skipton but only a 5 tons difference
    in the opposite direction.

Speaking with an Ex BR driver who was shedded at Stoke they used to have 6-8 coaches behind either an Ivatt or a Standard 2 and they were quite capable of sustaning 60MPH with this load

78019 had been pulling 7 coaches regularly, thats its limit on the GCR, although it usually pulls 5/6 coaches.

    More info regarding BR days.

"On level track a 2MT was allowed to take eight coaches albeit on ordinary
    (not express) timings."

78019 hauled 5 coaches up Berwyn in 2007 by herself

Didn't the SVR's Class 2 46443 cover some of the Cambrian Coast Express workings in 1987 after the Manor initiated the service on the first day ?

Sounds like a good idea for the gala! (Maybe 78019 on the rear in place of the 4F?) \:D/

    Gradient out of Skipton is
1-200 to Br 1 from the Down loop
    1 - 85 for 1 mile from 222m 3/4mp to 221 3/4mp 12 chain to 15 chain reverse curve. Reverse @ 222m 40c
(This will be the hardest bit of the climb with gradient and curvature at the worst.)

    1 - 90 to 220m 72 chain with 70 / 35 / 30 chain curves through the tunnels 18 + 18a
    1 - 125 to the 0 mp at the junction site at 220m 64c
For the remainder of the line I will have to dig out another diagram unless "Muppet" can provide.

I think those gradients are the official ones, however I also think they are not quite what is on the ground! The particularly suspect bit is through the platforms, where the gradient appears to level off a lot more. I'd suggest it matches the other platforms, but at a slightly higher level.

We'll know soon (well, in the scheme of things) with the studies into running down into Skipton when it gets gauged / measured etc.

I think it is steep into the platforms from the loop, then levels off, then is steep again. 1 in 85 seems entirely reasonable.

44422 was at a nymr gala in the early 90's and took 8 up goathland bank unassisted,it made it but i would not have been happy if it were my loco,it returned to the east lancs with a badly burned smokebox.

I recall being behind 44422 on Goathland bank and stopping for a blow up! This would be in the early 90's poss 93 or 94.

    Hi,

I think that a standard 2 78XXX has the tractive effort as a hunslet 16" which it is generally agreed are best on 5. As most things will it can do more but 5 is quite enough at Embsay.

Be interesting to see how 78019 gets on at Embsay, its a really nice choice and size of engine. Will certinlay sound good.

Dont forget an austerity is working quite hard on 6 at Embsay and thats a class 4 with quite small wheels.

    Cant wait!

    Smiler
