Just been reading the letters about the gala and somebody asked about the final runs of 73096. In response this has been posted:

We will actually plan to hold a special event for 'Farewell to the Standard 5' before its ticket expires at the end of September. The event will be held on 10 & 11 September, more details will soon follow, so watch this space.

I shall not be missing this!

So what may I ask will you be calling yourself after 73096 is out of traffic then?

    Regards
    Chris:

I spoke to someone at the Mid Hants last year who said they were trying to get an extension on the boiler ticket since the loco had been out of traffic for over a year following the cylinder block failure. Is that likely to happen or is it already on an extension?

It'll be one of the locos expected to leave the MHR in 2014 IIRC, and therefore even if it does end up stored between expiry of its ticket and leaving, it won't be left to the elements for that long a time. Anyway, we'll see what happens...

As Chessie and others have said, its very unlikily that she will see further use and it is expected to leave the MHR once the agreement expires , but in the fullness of time, who knows what the owners plans are for this engine ? weither she gets an extension will depend on her condition and what might need to be done to allow another 12 months , she could even leave as soon as the ticket expires if both parties agreed, to allow her to be overhauled elsewhere (bury?) for another mainline spell , as this has been noted before on here and theres no smoke without fire ,

September 11th and 12th has now been confirmed on the MHR web site for the farewell weekend to BR STD Class 5 73096. Looks like a modified time table is to follow at some point. Now showing a red square for both days on the time table page.

There are some details of this event in the New issue of The Railway Magazine (has a black 4472 on the cover). The report says that there will be four loco's in operation and that the freight train will be in use.

Was at the MHR last Monday and the talk in some quarters was that 73096 will be/has been sold with a main line future in store. I have no way of verifying this though.

I heard this too a while ago. 34016 was also mentioned in connection with a Main Line Future.

Yes it is a common rumour going around at the moment at the Railway.

Still time will tell , it will happen when it happens I guess.

    regards

It isn't, and it isn't. Sept will be it.

Who knows what will happen after 2014 - anyone got a crystal ball handy?

    73096 Farewell Event

Just a quick note to say more details have been added to the "Farewell to the Standard Five" Event, Including a provisional Locomotive Roster, (73096, obviously!, 31806, 850 and 34007). There are also opportunities to bid for Footplate rides on any of the operational engines, including 73096.
A 3 train service with double-headers and freight trains! I know were im going to be that weekend!
