Right, Reading General started it so heres a new one. 40106 is supposed to be the only one that never carried blue but carried a TOPS no and was withdrawn having never carried BR Blue but theres (AFIK) another loco that did the same, any ideas anyone?

I have a picture of 40106 showing proof it carried blue paint at some point and it's not the TOPS panel....

as for something else.. I think some 08's went to the grave in Green, what about the 01 at Holyhead - though I thought one of them was Black ?

Bound to be a Class 20I'd say (assuming it's not an 08)

You'd be on the right lines

Here's a close up, and the whole image.

You can see blue patches clearly underneath where the worksplates have been removed, on both cabs.

Both of you are on the right lines but its not 20141 according to my source. Thanks for the photo of 106 ADB where was that taken? I know that theres a rumor that during 106's last overhaul at Crewe She's supposed to have been prepped for going into blue, then BR had a change of heart at the last minute and she stayed green.

40106 is at Longsight Depot in that picture.

20141 was apparently Green until July 1980..

There's quite a few diesels withdrawn in Green.. most of the prototypes, due to accidents etc... even 10001...D818 / D5705 was green at Swindon in 1985..... d8233/d8243.. in 1986...

It's not 20050.. I remember seeing it in Blue after withdrawal but before it was repainted Green and preserved at the NRM.
I'm not sure what were trying to achieve... 20141 was the last repainted.. July 1980.. after 40106.

If there was another withdrawn before July 1980.. then 20141 obviously prevails... are you saying another 20 was green still running later than July 1980 but later withdrawn ?

not me, but I assume there must have been a green 20 withdrawn bfore 20141 was repainted (not after)

There was tons of diesels withdrawn in BR Green.. before 1980... classes 01,02,03,04,05,06,07,08,09,10,11,14,15,16,17,20,21,24,25,28,29,35,40,42,44,52 .... had members withdrawn before 1980 and pretty certain would have examples painted green in the scrap yard ???.. indeed some would have been withdrawn before BR even invented Blue... 10000 comes to mind.

    here's D322 for instance..(not my image)

24032 was withdrawn in BR two tone green.
(Though the NYMR had painted it that way first, whilst it was a "rental" from BR for a year or so before purchase). :)

    Others that were green on withdrawal with a tops number: 20030, 20064, 25322, 26001, 26007, 31165, 33008, 37350, 40122, 44004, 45106, 47840, 47851, 55002, whilst not green 50050 was in original livery too... 47484, 47500, 47522, 50007 & 60081 also withdrawn in green of a sorts..

If your trying to say.. BR Green liveried locomotives withdrawn in BR Green carrying a TOPS number...
    well there's quite a lot, starting with 02001/3 &4, 03128 / 134, 06010, 24090/2/134...

There's some bedtime reading here... (of course not all were withdrawn)..but there's a good number of this 500+ locos that might fit your category.
    http://www.railblue.com/rail_blue_history_2.htm

of course I suspect 20014 is the one your eluding too, but as shown above it's far from the only diesel withdrawn in BR green with a TOPS number, if the scope widened to units.. well there was a BR green class 504 coach at Stoke sidings well into the mid-1980s.
One thing it's safe to say that BR Green never really entirely disappeared off the network before privatisation... there was always something somewhere.
