    All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – January 1964

    Diesel and electric locomotive building was in full swing with British Railways workshops at Darlington andDerbybuilding class 25’s and Swindon andCrewebuilding class 52 Westerns. Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric building at Vulcan Foundry and also at the Robert Stephensons and Hawthorn works, Darlington class 37’s, Clayton at Derby were building class 17’s, Beyer Peacock building class 35 Hymeks and Brush were building class 47’s at Loughborough.

    With main line diesel production in the month of over fifty locomotives it is a little surprising the steam withdrawals in the month showed a marked decline from the preceding few months with only one hundred and fifty seven condemned spread over forty nine classes. However this included another BR Standard class locomotive 84007 only ten years old and the first inroad into the Stanier 8F 2-8-0’s with six withdrawn. Also one main line diesel was withdrawn BRCW prototype D0260 Lion. At least three of the January withdrawals escaped being broken up Great Western Hall 4-6-0 4936 and Southern Railway S15 4-6-0’s 30825 and 30847.

    Main linediesel production in the month dropped from over fifty locomotives in January to thirty five. Steam withdrawals in the month also showed a marked decline from the preceding month and at only one hundred and ten locomotives condemned (spread over forty two classes) was about a third of the monthly totals at the end of 1963. However the withdrawals included six BR Standard class locomotives, class 5 4-6-0 73094, class 2 2-6-0 78009, class 3 2-6-2T’s 82002/08/43 and class 9F 2-10-0 92223. Unsurprisingly 73094 and 92223 were later reinstated but it really signalled that the end of steam traction was fast approaching and nothing was beyond condemnation. It was also a bad month for Austerity 2-8-0s with eleven condemned and Stanier Black Five 4-6-0s with nine condemned. Two Stanier Coronation Pacifics were also withdrawn in this month 46229 Duchess of Hamilton and 46233 Duchess of Sutherland however both escaped being broken up and still survive today.

Steam withdrawals in the month continued the marked decline from the end of 1963 and at only one hundred and four locomotives condemned (spread over thirty eight classes) was still about a third of the monthly totals at the end of 1963. It was also a bad month for Austerity 2-8-0s with eighteen condemned and Stanier Jubilee 4-6-0s with eight condemned. Another Stanier Coronation Pacific and two Gresley A4 Pacifics were also condemned in the month. However one of the Stanier Jubilee 4-6-0s condemned escaped being broken up and still survives today.

    Main line diesel production in the month decreased slightly from the previous month to thirty three and it would appear that D1563 suffered some issue during construction/test as it was delivered significantly out of sequence from Crewe works. Steam withdrawals in the month increased sharply from the preceding few months at one hundred and sixty four locomotives condemned (spread over thirty six classes), however this was still about a half of the monthly totals at the end of 1963. It was also another bad month for Austerity 2-8-0s, with twenty eight condemned, Great Western 57xx Pannier tanks, with seventeen condemned and Fowler 4F 0-6-0s with fourteen condemned.

Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric building at Vulcan Foundry and also at the Robert Stephensons and Hawthorn works, Darlington class 37’s, Clayton at Derby were building class 17’s and Brush were building class 47’s at Loughborough.

    New locomotives:

    Main line diesel production in the month increased slightly from the previous month to thirty five and it would appear that class 47 delivery from Brush, Loughborough had hit problems with significant out of sequence deliveries. D6898 would also be the last diesel locomotive built for British Railways at the Robert Stephensons and Hawthorn works, Darlington. Steam withdrawals in the month increased sharply from the preceding few months at two hundred and one condemned (spread over fifty six classes). It was also another bad month for Great Western 57xx Pannier tanks, with twenty six condemned and Fowler 4F 0-6-0s with eighteen condemned. A significant change in the withdrawal policy was the condemnation of seventeen Stanier Black Five 4-6-0 which had suffered some condemnations up to now and the condemnation of no less than twelve BR Standards including seven 9F 2-10-0s with six of them being less than seven years old. Why these modern freight engines were not transferred to replace some of the more ancient freight engines still in traffic at this point in time is a mystery to me. One final withdrawal in May 1964 was class 33 diesel locomotive D6502 damaged beyond repair following a collision at Itchingfield Junction.

    Main line diesel production in the month decreased from the previous month to twenty eight including a couple of late class 47 deliveries from Brush, Loughborough. Steam withdrawals in the month increased again from the preceding few months at two hundred and thirty six condemned (spread over fifty three classes). The Beeching era branch line closures were starting to be felt by the locomotive fleet with forty one 2-6-2T or 2-6-4T tank engine condemnations which included eight BR Standards. At least three steam locomotives withdrawn in June 1964 survived being broken up Hall class 4-6-0’s 5967 and 6960 and Somerset and Dorset 2-8-0 58909.

    Main line diesel production in the month increased from the previous month to thirty four including Swindon commencing delivery of class 14’s. Steam withdrawals in the month decreased to one hundred and sixty five condemned (spread over forty nine classes), although three locomotives were subsequently reinstated. The Beeching era branch line closures continued to be felt by the locomotive fleet with another thirty 2-6-2T or 2-6-4T tank engine condemnations which included ten BR Standards and thirty four 0-6-0PT Pannier tanks condemened. In addition to the ten BR Standard 2-6-4T’s condemned another four BR standards were withdrawn including class 4, 2-6-0 76097 which was less than seven years old. At least one steam locomotive withdrawn in July 1964 survived being broken up Hawkesworth Pannier tank 9466.

    Main line diesel production in the month decreased from the previous month to twenty five and class 25 D7597 would be the last locomotive to be built at the railway workshops at Darlington. Steam withdrawals in the month decreased significantly to only ninety four locomotives condemned (spread over forty one classes). Withdrawals this month include the first two Merchant Navy 4-6-2 pacific’s and another five BR standards were withdrawn including two class 9F 2-10-0’s 92198/99 which were less than six years old having entered traffic in October 1958. Also withdrawn was an early London Midland and Scottish Railway diesel shunter 12030 which had entered traffic in April 1942.

Large inroads were made into the surviving GWR fleet with one hundred and eighteen locomotives condemned, the surviving LMS 4F 0-6-0 fleet with thirty nine condemned, the surviving LMS Jubilee 4-6-0 fleet with nineteen condemned and a serious start was made on the SR West Country 4-6-=2 fleet with eleven condemned. Withdrawals of BR standards also started to become common with thirteen condemned.

    All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – November 1964

    Diesel locomotive building was being undertaken by British Railways workshops at Derby building class 25’s, Crewe building class 47’s and Swindon building class 14’s. Locomotive contractors were also in production with Beyer Peacock building class 17’s and Brush were building class 47’s at Loughborough.

    New locomotives:
    Class 14 – D9517/20/21/22
    Class 17 – D8609
    Class 25 – D7508/09/10/11/12/13/14
    Class 47 – D1632/33/34/35, D1777/81/82/83/84/86/87/89

    Main line diesel production in the month almost halved from the previous months forty five to twenty four. Steam withdrawals in the month remained steady at two hundred and fifteen locomotives condemned (spread over fifty one classes). Large inroads continued to be made into the surviving GWR fleet with another one hundred and two condemned along with fifteen BR standards, one of which, class 9F 2-10-0 92210 was only just over five years old.. Two Southern Railway 0-6-0 diesel shunters (15201/03) were also condemned.

Locomotive contractors were also in production with Beyer Peacock and Clayton, Derby building class 17’s, English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry building class 37’s and Brush building class 47’s at Loughborough.

    New locomotives:

    Class 17 – D8586, D8610/11
    Class 25 – D7515/16/17/18/20
    Class 37 – D6949/50/51
    Class 47 – D1636/37/38/39/40/41/42/43/44/45/46, D1785/88/90/91/93/94
    Class 85 – E3095

    Main line diesel production in the month increased slightly from the previous months twenty four to thirty. Steam withdrawals in the month decreased from two hundred and fifteen locomotives condemned to one hundred and thirty nine. A further twelve BR standards were condemned, one of which, class 9F 2-10-0 92207 was only just over five years old. The remaining Southern Railway 0-6-0 diesel shunter (15202) was also condemned.
