    Extracts from the RCTS Railway Observer from 50 years ago.

    Diesel and Electric locomotive building was in full swing with British Railways workshops at Darlington building class 10’s and class 25’s, Horwich building class 09’s, Doncaster building class 03’s and class 85 electric locomotives, Derby building class 46 “Peaks” and Crewe building class 45 “Peaks”. Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric building at Vulcan Foundry class 37’s, class 40’s and class 55 Deltics. Also English Electric were building at the Robert Stephensons and Hawthorn works, Darlington class 20’s, British Thompson and Houston were building class 15’s and class 81 electric locomotives, Beyer Peacock at Manchester were building class 35 Hymek’s, Brush were building class 30’s (31’s) at Loughborough, North British Locomotive Co. at Glasgow were building class 43’s, the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co. were building class 27 and class 33’s, Yorkshire Engine Co. were building class 02’s and Hudswell Clark were building a batch of 0-6-0 diesel shunters.

    Notable steam withdrawals included the first Stanier Black Five 4-6-0 45401 and the second Stanier Jubilee 4-6-0 45630 Swaziland both withdrawn following collision damage sustained at Warrington.

    Cardiff Canton MPD became crew training on hydraulic diesel locomotives in preparation for the first allocation of main line diesel to Canton expected in February 1962.

    The first main line diesel arrived at Hull Diarycoates (Class 37 D6730) for crew training on the 3rd November 1961.

    From the 27th November 1961 two Southern Region BRCW type 3’s (class 33) were booked to work the Holborough – Uddingstone Cement tanks and return empties from Holborough to York.
