    Extracts from the RCTS Railway Observer from 50 years ago.

    Diesel locomotive building was getting into full swing with British Railways workshops at Darlington building class 08’s, Horwich building class 08’s, Doncaster building class 03’s, Derby building class 08’s, class 24’s and class 44’s, Crewe building class 08’s and class 24’s and Swindon building class 03’s. Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric building at Vulcan Foundry class 20’s and class 40’s and at the Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn works class 20’s, British Thompson and Houston were building class 15’s and had just commenced delivery of class 81, Brush were building class 30’s at Loughborough, North British Locomotive Co. were building class 21’s, Andrew Barclay were building class 06’s and Hunslet class 05’s.

    Notable withdrawals were 32697 the last LBSCR E1/R, 0-6-2T which was built in 1876 and 60503 Lord President and 60505 Thane of Fife, the first A2/2, 4-6-0’s to be withdrawn (which were rebuilds of Gresley’s P2, 2-8-2)

    D5563 and 5564 arrived at Hornsey MPD to start crew training in preparation for thirty class 31’s being allocated for GN suburban passenger, empty stock and local duties as replacements for the twenty class 26 (D5300 – 19) and ten class 21 (D6100 – 09) locomotives currently allocated, which would be transferred to Scotland.

    Notable withdrawals were 61607 Blickling the last LNER B2 (B17 rebuild) 4-6-0 which was built in 1928 as a B17 and rebuilt as a B2 in 1947, 60104 Solario the first Gresley A3, 4-6-2 to be withdrawn which was built in 1923 and 62785 the last GER E4, 2-4-0 built in 1895 and now preserved at Bressingham

    Following crew training and running in the recent class 40 arrivals at Gateshead (D237 -D249) began taking over LNER pacific duties between Newcastle and Edinburgh.

    Although not officially accepted into traffic until January 1960 the first class 33, D6500 arrived at Hither Green MPD on the 17th December 1959.
