Alstom has delivered the first two trains destined for Chennai’s new metro system.

The trains are the first to be built in India by Alstom and are part of a €243 million order for 42 four-car units.

Set to be delivered by 2015, the new trains are being built at Alstom’s factory in Sricity, Andhra Pradesh, which currently employs over 150 people.

Chennai’s new fleet of metro trains will be capable of reaching speeds of 80 km/h and each train will be equipped with a regenerative braking system.

Henri Poupart-Lafarge, president of Alstom Transport, said: “The new world class Sricity plant plays a vital role in Alstom’s strategy to set up a local industrial footprint in India, enhance proximity to its local customers and serve the expanding Indian infrastructure market.”
