ARRIVA, Britain, has won a nine-year contract to operate the Pågatåg regional franchise in the Skåne region of southern Sweden, centred on Malmo.

Arriva beat off competition from Danish State Railways (DSB), and SJ, Sweden’s national rail operator.

Arriva will operate 26 Litra X11 trains on the 47-station network, and plans to increase the fleet size to 60 trains, as well as expanding the network and providing timetable improvements, reports the International Railway Journal.

The contract is said to be worth £15 million to Arriva, and could be extended another two years should it prove successful. Arriva must now create a Scandinavian operation to oversee the contract, which will be known as Arriva Tog.
