Last week "Ashington No.5" from the North Tyneside Railway paid a visit to Woodhorn Colliery in Ashington to be put on display as part of their annual miners picnic event. The loco was delivered new to Ashington in 1939 and worked there until 1969 before moving to North Norfolk for preservation, returning to the North East in 1991. According to an ex railwayman the loco was mainly used for hauling wagons through the screens and over the weighbridge.

Owen Edwards took some brilliant photographs of the engine at the colliery and I'm sure you will agree it looks fantastic against the winding gear in the back ground. Click on the link to see for yourself.

Ashington No.5 can be seen running on the North Tyneside Railway, adjoining Stephenson Railway Museum in North Shields on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays. Come along for a look.
