Yeah, I was there at the time & the Winchfield event around the same time give & take a year or so.
Looking at Streetview if it is the same place, it has totally changed.
The wire fence has given way to a solid wooden affair & where the tents etc were is now flats.
The lines themselves look abandoned & overgrown.

I was there for that - I have some badly over-exposed photos somewhere or other. Frightening to think that the first four 59s are 26+ years old now…

Yes I am an active volunteer
I have vague memories of a top class beer tent at the event. I think Pitfield Dark Star did most of the damage. :)

Two Google Earth views of what I think was the open day site, one from 1999 & one from 2008.
Also a current streetview picture of the road alongside I think. The flats on the right is where the tents etc were & the railway behind the wooden fence.
A question, is the 2BIL unit still around? I remember those running in & out of Reading South(ern) on the Waterloo services.

Well there are 8 more 66's just been ordered by GBRF, same basic design. So must be alright.
How long did the 56's, 58's & the like last?

No I do not currently volunteer
The class 56's & class 58's lasted until the coal traffic vanished!
