BBC - In pictures: The empty railways of America

An interesting perspective. The daylight scenario to complement the work of O Winston Link perchance ?

 

I had heard about American locos being coaled - mechanically en route - so that's one of the places they did it

 

interesting pics but no connection with winston's work. In fact not a loco to be seen and hardly and item of rolling stock.

 

I disagree; O Winston Link sought to capture the railway as part of the environment whilst this latest collection seeks to capture the railway within the environment. A subtle but distinct difference that perhaps only photographers will appreciate.

For me it's chalk and cheese - Sanderson's style is documentary - photographs of an environment very much 'as is' whereas Link's work is very much contrived and thus almost art produced at night to give him control over his lighting. I'm not sure I would describe one as complementary to the other, just different but no less interesting for that.

 

Beat me to it. Anyone who doesn't realise that Winston's work was contrived has miss understood his work.
