Best presented engines in preservation

Rasprava u 'Steam Traction' pokrenuta od ADB968008, 13. Siječanj 2012..

A comment in another thread brought a thought on people's perceptions of he best presented locomotives in preservation... (it's a variation on livery debate).

    My candidates are..

35028 -this looked immaculate even before it's repaint
1306. -the team polishing this at Llangollen in 2010 must have sore limbs at the end of everyday.
4965 - saw this in Stafford in 2008? Just before overhaul, looking like it'd just come from works, not going.

I think one definite candidate would have to be 80080. When she first appeared on the ELR the paint was immaculate, and after spending a day cleaning her last summer, everything else is perfect: the smokebox door has no lean, buffers are straight, boiler cladding lies perfectly beneath the crinolines. Excepting the scratch on the RH side tank from where she hit a tree, i can't really find a visible fault.

45231 is always well presented, the tender reflects the scenery like a mirror and i like the polished driving wheel tyres and smokebox door handles. Just a shame the cylinder drain cocks always have a mind of their own

And of course, you HAVE to mention 6229, 4003 and 5000

Not sure why though, the majority of static locomotives are often spotless. Surely (bar a layer of dust) it's far easier to keep a static locomotive shiney?

CR No. 828 is extremely smart as is Standard 5 No. 73050, 24 'Calbourne', 9600 & 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgecumbe'. 34059's brief time running was always in spotless condition too.

a"best presented" steam engine is not relevant of authenticity and charm of the "railway atmosphere" :rolleyes1:don't confuse with a washed (swiss or dutch mode)saucepan

5043 would get my vote. Saw it coming by my signalbox in September and thought it looked immaculate.

Well they are preserved locos, and the thread is about preserved locos.
The standard of work to get them looking that way has made them some of preservation's best presented locos

I think all of the Tyseley locos fall into this category. 5043, 4965, 9600, 7752 etc. Never have I seen one of them looking anything less than immaculate. On a Shakespeare last year I noticed that even the frames, brake blocks, spokes etc had been scrubbed and polished on 4965. Dedication!

I agree about all of the locomotives in Tyseley. There is no doubt that when one goes on a trip that it shall be a success. All of them nice and clean.

Caley 828 as seen on the SVR has to be up there with the front-runners.

Whilst the 'immaculate' appearance is to be applauded, that slightly used look is more authentic.

How about the Isle of Man locos, daily operation and always nicely clean. (Waiting for someone to argue they're not preserved!)

44871 gets my vote along with 5690 Leander, both have always seemed well cared for (both in terms of operating condition and paintwork) as far as I've seen/heard

We have a very dedicated group that come in and help clean the engines. We are very lucky to have them.

35028 without a doubt. Spotless. For the 'slightly used' look, I predictably choose 34067 from the photos I've seen and the brief glimpse I got of her at Harman's Cross last October. That or 70013 or even 44932.

I agree Tyseley locos are always well turned out, especially 5043 but for me the finish on 71000 is always stunning. My vote goes to 'Duke of Gloucester'.
