Nice photo of Cecil Raikes. By the way it's an 0-6-4 wheelbase.

My brother was a surveyor at Birch Coppice and took me to see a loco there around 1970-1. I don't remember it as being any of those illustrated, I've a feeling it was an Avonside 0-6-0ST. Does anyone know anything about the locos there in the later years?

I think that the proverbial knickers have got in a twist here! The photos are at Coppice colliery, in Derbyshire, not Birch Coppice colliery in Warwickshire. The captions identify the locos themselves so I'm not sure why you are seeking identification.

The Liverpool Museums history of Cecil Raikes refers to 50 years spent at Shipley Colliery Derbyshire.

I was talking about Birch Coppice Colliery, near Tamworth, though - anyone able to tell me what I saw there?

61624 I have found some info about one loco. A 1916 Manning Wardle 0-6-0ST was originally at Baddersley colliery. It was named Merevale, but its name was changed to John Robert. It moved to Birch Coppice colliery in 1962. No details were given about when it was scrapped.

Std tank - Thanks for that - I was convinced at the time that I'd seen an Avonside, but perhaps it was a Manning Wardle.
