I see Clan Line is hauling a rare non VSOE train to Yeovil on the 16th of July.

Tickets came through today. The outward route via Streatham has been removed due to loading gauge problems in the Tooting area, instead the train will now travel via Staines.
    Times
    London Waterloo 09.00 - 21.24
    Woking 10.38 - 20.45
    Salisbury 12.07 - 17.50
    Yeovil Jn 13.11 - 16.44

Hopefully a good run down from Woking and a good one back from Eastleigh. We live in hope.

    Me too!

    But...........

Probably need something better than 89 minutes from Woking to Salisbury to get a good run in that direction, although that may include a stop at Winchfield.

Doubt they are the final times though as we would have seen them on uksteam.info.

Still waiting for those final times before deciding. Won't do anything before I see them as I don't want an early start after a very busy Friday. And last I heard it seemed, (only seemed), that a box could be on the back on the return from Salisbury.

Oh well. Tangy was superb last Saturday. Have to live on that for a while I guess.

And of course if I keep dithering and don't go, we all know what will happen. No box and storming runs from Winchfield to Salisbury and back from Eastleigh to Woking........................

Now there's an optimist. Perhaps it's time for you to put pressure on UKRT to find out what's happening as we have no times yet and they have my money but not your's! One thing's for certain, having gone to the trouble to get hold of Clan Line, they will have no friends if their planning ends up with a mediocre day.

Better than a steam ban. Bryan a couple of posts ago was on about a box poss from Salisbury. If a 66 brings stock in to Waterloo (Probably), would same loco follow us and if it did why? Surely it's there for shunting movements at London. A path would have to be found or another DBS Loco? Perhaps it's all a nasty rumour.

I read on the special instructions (times on a gen group but it would be bad karma to repost and anyway they'll be on UKsteam soon) that no diesel is attached, except from Eastleigh to Victoria.

Looks like you timers have got the non-stop schedule you wanted. I wouldn't worry about the DL added to the rear at Eastleigh on the return. '28 is quite capable of lifting 13 + a dozing diesel to Roundwood in short order, as demonstrated in July 2007 (and on other occasions). For those of us toting cameras, it's not such a great schedule. We rely on a nice long stop at Salisbury to scoot from Battledown to Tisbury ;-) Mind you, the weather forecast is such that it might not be worth taking a camera out of the house!

A very rare SR even time start to stop schedule, Overton to Salisbury. 28 miles in 28 minutes.

Nothing else stands out. Except the box on the back from Eastleigh because of Waterloo Platform 19.

Have the possible chance of a ticket, but will sleep on that. Eldest daughter getting married tomorow and obviously giving that my full attention.

I wish I could be as positive about the schedule as you seem to be. It really is amazing that with the one hand NR generously produces a reasonable set of times and an opportunity for the Tangmere tour de force last weekend only to take it all away again with this trip and what can politely be described as a dog's dinner of a schedule.

Let's start with the fact that since Clan Line last went through Tooting there is now a gauge problem, sufficient to cause the train to be diverted via Staines at the last minute and therefore with the need for a water stop before the one that was originally planned for Salisbury. Just to ensure that water has to be taken NR manages to spin the time out to OVER AN HOUR AND A HALF from Waterloo to Woking. We then spend over half an hour getting to Basingstoke that we cannot reach early as we are right up the tail of the Salisbury service that we then follow to the water stop. Finally we are given a booked even time schedule from Overton to Salisbury as mentioned in another post, which will actually be remarkable if achieved.

The return home from Eastleigh is the usual nonsense of slow line to Shawford and then out and up behind the service train with 36 minutes to pass Basingstoke when Clan Line has previously done it start to stop in 30 and a half with 500 tons. If we are early then we will be up the tail of the service train again.

Finally there is the additional load of a Class 67 from Eastleigh it would seem, assuming of course that it is switched off. And all because UKRT cannot find it in themselves to run a shorter train with no need to use Platform 19 at Waterloo and therefore no need for a diesel attachment, just like RTC and SD seem prepared to do on special occasions. I know it's all about profit margins but if UKRT manages to secure the engine off its OE work, you would have hoped for something better than this. What a waste, although I'm sure that all the DBS folk involved will try to make something out of it.

If I were Gerald Daniels - ex Salisbury Area Manager - who is a guest on the trip, I'd probably be pleased that I don't have anything to do with the railway any more.

I'm sorry if this upsets any reader or seems unfair but for £90 I do expect some value for money.

The special schedule for 9 July required a great deal of negotiation over a period of 9 months or so, including the agreement of South West Trains to adjust some of their service train schedules. It is quite unrealistic to expect this to happen for every steam trip. Just be thankful that steam is permitted to run at all, especially with the much higher traffic densities these days on many lines.

It is indeed true that SWT were extremely helpful and accommodating for SD's 9 July train, as a result of much behind-the-scenes negotiation, principally due to Graeme Bunker's approach to SWT's own planners. Whilst most of the amendments were minor (re-platforming and the odd minute here and there), they all had to be documented and formally re-bid, so as not to incur performance penalties, which, if not managed properly, can sky-rocket on the Southern.

Whilst it gave excellent paths and that undeniable warm feeling to the die-hard Southern officiandos (often resident on this forum), it simply cannot be considered or expected to be the norm; charter operators, such as ourselves or DBS, have rights to bid - but only in spaces left after the working timetable is locked down, together with all the planned engineering. Of course, an objective views says it's a risky way of selling a business but, on balance, it generally works, offering a train for A to B and back again, as a good day out, if not always in the paths of old, as some might wish.

Like VT's 'Bristolian', something very special can be pulled out of the hat but only with disproportionate input from those who probably gain least from it, other than the satisfaction of seeing something work well. Certainly from the viewpoint of this forum, be grateful that so much steam continues to be accommodated and be especially grateful, when, very occasionally, something really special comes together.

Yes David. Appreciated, understood and I'm sure that it's all a potential nightmare for SWT as well. But the late identification of a gauge issue was hardly helpful and other problems seem to have flowed from that. For the punter, the issue is that it's just never clear what you actually are going to get when a trip is publicised and booked. (July 9th excepted). This isn't a particularly happy state of affairs and I do wish that all the 'parts of the whole' would pay more attention to detail at the planning stage and that someone actually follows the whole process through, logically and with some clarity of purpose so that any problems can be ironed out early on. I bet the food in dining doesn't suffer the same problem!

Have to say I'm with Big Al on this one.

It is the only chance us MN freaks have of getting a decent run with Clan Line, or any MN on the main line at present. And the schedule is a right mess.

To put it into perspective for those who think us timers are so very picky. Virtually all of that schedule is the equivalent to us/me, as would be lineside photters going out and seeing the loco with a large face on the front and advertising over the whole of the sides of the tender. i.e it's steam on the main line in the 21st century, so what is there to moan about?

Yes of course, we can't have the wonderful schedule that SWT and all the others involved gave us for Tangy last weekend. This schedule only emphahsises the enormous effort that was put in. Including by Graeme Bunker who seeemed rather modest about his own role on that at Waterloo last Saturday evening, (but amongst other things he'd accepted a ten car train which must have cost him revenue). Of course, realistically we have to view that as a fairly rare event. But a special event like tomorrow surely deserved a bit better at least in one direction?

I doubt things will improve until we get one or more extra MNs on the main line. Then we will have the chance of the occasional run getting a good timing purely through the way things happen with steam timings. Rather than waiting for the MNLPS, (of which I was a founder member in 1967), and after a very long gap have been a member again for a few years, to allow us some crumbs that drop from the table once a year.

Back to my hobby horse. At some stage we are going to need fewer steam bases and fewer steam routes for longer term main line steam survival. Concentrate expertise and facilities. IMHO of course and I know most will disagree with me, and for all sorts of reasons that are, today, perfectly valid. But such a move could see possiblity of a Q timing, (or something like that), being built into the normal timetables. London, (preferably Waterloo), to Weymouth being such a route. Not just because that is my old stamping ground but more because it does seem to support a significant number of steam tours at present.

    End of sermon!

Go on. Fire away. You'll miss for the next few hours, (and normally you'd have a damn good target to aim at!), as I'm off to give my eldest daughter away at her wedding! LOL.

WOW! Was typing this while several other posts were being made.
