Can anyone recommend a book on Kings that covers technical information about them, from design to production to later development? I'm not thinking along the lines of a picture book or a 'pictorial tribute' but something more engineering based.

"The G.W.R. Stars, Castles & Kings" by O.S.NOCK published in two parts by David and Charles and as a revised, combined volume by Book Club Associates in 1980 would seem like a good place to start, I paid £5 for mine last year in the G.C.R's "Emporium".
