Boston commuters are being given the chance to choose the future design of the city’s rail transit map.

The competition, led by operator MBTA, has given would-be graphic designers the chance to submit their own vision for the new Boston route map.

Six of the best designs have been shortlisted by a panel of experts and the city now has until September 20 to vote for its favourite.

The winning entry is not certain to replace the current map but is at least likely to shape the look of the new design.

The competition featured two classes – one for more traditional designs and another for more unorthodox creations.

MBTA is looking to redesign its route map to accomodate new stations and lines – some of which are under construction, others that are still at the planning stage.
