The trip was the final train on the Twywell branch (formerly Iron Ore traffic to Corby Steel Works,) organised by the Rushden Railway Society, who had 32 members on (including some children,) we also had a party of 8 Branch Line Society members, an extra brakevan just for us. It was class 25 loco number 25.270 and 6 brakevan at a fare of £4.05p each. The trip, organised by the Corby British Rail local area manager at the time left from Wellinborough Loco shed, (with a traffic inspector on board) up side at 10.25. We arrived platform 3 at Kettering 11.10 and had to get off while they ran round in the yard.
Leaving at 11.35 we ran to Twywell, freight traffic had finished 2 months earlier, although they had done a trial empty run the week before. We noted Cranmore Station was nicely refurbished and the surprised occupants came out on the platform to wave. We arrived Twywell 12.15, departed 12.50 after running round propelled almost to the end of line in the heashunt past the former Twywell Station, where the iron ore pellets used to be loaded.
We had a fast run back to Kettering, as the crew were keen to book off, arriving platform 3 at 13.22, departing 13.25. This time they let us stay on for the run round in the yard, departing south at 13.35, arriving Wellingborough Loco Shed (via slow lines) 13.55.
We were lucky to find out about the trip, only by chance and about a week before, there was no internet! I had phone Kettering Station who knew nothing, then wrote to Corby Area Manager who kindly phoned me.
There is a very good view of the long brick viaduct on the line off the A!$ just east of Kettering, part of the road is on the trackbed.
