I might be being thick here, but how can a frictionless material provide any kind of motion damping effect? I’m thinking here of the old vintage car disc dampers, ditto caravan stabiliser arms, both of which feature discs of fiction material clamped between metal plates.

I'm just thinking that if anyone has discovered a frictionless material, it would be wonderful for bearings etc.

I bow to your knowledge I'm not a mechanical engineer, but a manufacturing engineer old ProdE brigade...I can see though that you get more spring in a given area than a coil spring...Still thinking......

Just a thought..has any finite element analysis been done on this. My wild, maybe, theory, a round bar is harder to bend than a rectangular section...hence my thought on damping....

Is there no one in the UK or even Europe who can make you these springs? What about Italy, there are lots of steel suppliers out there? Germany would be another bet.

Someone, somewhere, will be able to do this.

General point: If springs of this section are common to other Riddles 'standards', I'm assuming not having come across sourcing problems before, they're not generally problematic. Does anyone know whether the 82045 (cl.3) build uses this section and if so, how did they get round the issue?

May have to be corrected by Std tank but Class 3 is a design that evolved from Ivatt 2 and no doubt borrowed heavily existing designs of pony/trailing truck . plus a std 3 doesnt actually have a bogie
Std Pacifics were a 'new' design and so whichever drawing office charged with 'new bogies' may have had their own/ new ideas....

Cheers .... had assumed some vaguely analogous form of side control on pony trucks. Developing an LMS design must've gone down well in Swindon's D.O!

I was half wondering whether the number of surviving 'standards' featuring such springs might make it worthwhile for one workshop to 'tool up' for this section, though I do realise this design sounds very different kettle of fish from leaf or coil springs, As an aside, I do know the IMR's smithy formerly could and did produce their own (leaf) springs for rolling stock.

The Stanier 8Fs also used trapezoidal section side control springs as their pony truck side control system, as handed down from the Stanier 2-6-0s and probably 2-6-4Ts.Swindon was well versed in these trucks, having built many 8Fs during the war. We found parts of 2968's pony truck stamped GWR during the current overhaul.

In which case, the same must apply to (certainly) Brighton .... works and D.O

Pony trucks on the Standard 4 tanks, Standard 3s, Standard 2s, Ivatt 4s and Ivatt 2s all use the same side control springs. Details of the rectangular section springs were given to two spring companies. Both companies came up with the same round section springs as replacement for the rectangular springs. The round section springs have been fitted to 82045 and the Ivatt and Standard 2s at the GCR. The locos, so fitted, that have run at the GCR have had no problem.
