BRITISH train fares are the highest in Europe, according to a survey by The Sun newspaper.

The Sun says “long-suffering British passengers travel only THREE miles for every Pound they spend.”

By comparison The Sun says a £1 train fare will take you 6.8 miles in Holland, 8.75 miles in France, 10 miles in Spain, 14.3 miles in Portugal, and 17.5 miles in Poland — based on the average cost of single, second class journeys at peak-time.

A Sun random search for the cost of peak-time, standard class, single fares around Europe found a 208-mile journey from London to Manchester costs £101 (just over two miles per £1). A similar 199-mile journey from Lisbon to Porto, Portugal, is just £15.75 (nearly 13 miles per £1).

And while a 412 mile journey from London to Edinburgh costs £110 (less than four miles per £1), a 410 mile trip from Paris to Marseille, France, is just £37.60 (nearly 11 miles per £1).

Poland is cheapest of all. A 385-mile trip from Gdansk to Krakow costs just £16.25 (23 miles per £1).

A spokeswoman for the watchdog Rail Passengers’ Council told The Sun: “What is important is that passengers receive value for money and passengers in Britain don’t think that they are getting that at the moment.”

    • The Sun reports that the price of a single London Underground fare has risen this week from £2 to £3, making London the world’s most expensive capital for underground travel.
